2021 is here! This means a whole new set of handbag trends to follow, covet, and wear. In past years, we have looked for the next great shape, designer, and IT bag. This year, things are moving a little bit into the past; as well as the classic realm.

The new year is all about classic IT bags, revisited IT bags, IT brands, and a few fun bags. Sound like a lot? It is. There is a lot going on in the handbag world this year! So, make sure you’re sitting down, this will be a lot of information!

IT Designers: This year, if you think seeking the ultimate IT bag is too confusing, just stick with the IT brands of the year. You can pretty much wear anything by these designers and brands; and you will be rocking an IT bag. Look for anything Bottega Veneta, Cult Gaia, Prada, Givenchy, Chloe, Loewe, and Mansur Gavriel.

Colors: Fashion is revisiting color blocking; a huge trend roughly a decade ago. Look for bags in fun and mood-uplifting colors. Also look for the color of the year yellow, as well as grey. You can still wear classic black, but adding some color might be just the right mood-up-lifter after last year. Metallics are also making a comeback, so if you want to sparkle and shine, this is your year!

Fabrications: Leather and faux leather are still important. In fact, technology has really moved faux leather forward in such a way that it can be really hard to tell it apart from real leather. Look for faux leather pieces to help reduce your carbon footprint. Also, straw, raffia, anything woven, and stamped croc are huge in 2021.

Silhouettes: The new year is all about classic silhouettes and retro vibes. Look for the baguette with 1990s inspiration, the return of the hobo bag, oversized and gigantic bags you could fit the kitchen sink into, fan shaped totes, netted bags, half circles, and the pouch clutch.

Specific IT bags: Looking for an exact IT bag to rock this year? Some of these might already be in your closet! Look for classic IT bags such as the Chanel 2.55, Louis Vuitton Neverful, Givenchy Antigona, Mansur Gavriel bucket bag, Chloe Marcie, and Fendi Baguette. Want to buy new? Look for the new Prada Cleo-it’s so hot, it’s already sold out. Old IT bags which are back include the Coach Swinger, Gucci Jackie, and Bottega Veneta Jodie; perhaps you have one in your closet. Pre-Fall 2020 is starting to hit store shelves, and online store websites. As new, and repeat, handbag styles start to emerge for early fall, we are seeing a clearer picture as to which bags will be hot for the fall 2020 season. These bags reflect the handbag trends we have been talking about since spring, and they are fabulous.

The Pouch

The pouch is the impractical bag that keeps on giving! This large, soft, pouch clutch fits everything you need throughout the day, without a convenient strap. The Bottega Veneta version is the trend starter, and it comes in over ten colors! This is the bag we saw on the arms of street style stars at fashion week; and it is showing signs of speeding up in popularity; not slowing down!

Since this bag is such a hot trend, other IT handbag brands are answering the trend with their own versions. There is really only one other version of this style worth your time; Mansur Gavriel’s Cloud clutch. This fabulous clutch offers an unique silhouette, and a price point well under $1000. This means it is the more affordable way to rock the trend. It is also the way I rock the trend! I own it in black with flamma interior, and I love it. It is actually comfortable to carry around, and fits everything I need to bring with me during the day; with space to spare! The Cloud clutch comes in several colors too. You’ll love it!

If a clutch is just to cumbersome for you, Mansur Gavriel has a fabulous small version with a cross body strap. It too comes in a variety of colors. I’m trying to decide if I want this pretty beige color, or the blue. Decisions decisions!

To up the pouch game, Bottega Veneta has also introduced a pouch version with a chunky chain. I dream about this bag. I believe you may too.

The Hobo

Yes, the hobo is back. You can rock your hobo bag small or large. You can choose soft and slouchy, or stiff and structured. There is no wrong way to rock the hobo. This fits perfectly in with the emerging ’70’s influence in apparel we will see hit store shelves this fall 2020 season. It is also a great casual bag; since this year is very casual in style. You should have one in your closet, if not, go for the IT version of the hobo bag by Chloe or Bottega Veneta. They are two hot ways to rock a hobo. I’m crushing on Chloe’s version. It’s fabulous.

Puffy Bags

Playing off the pouch, puffy bags are hotter than hot for fall. Look for puffy, pillow-like bags which double as a pillow for a daytime nap, as well as puffy quilts from YSL, and puffy weaves from Bottega Veneta. The number one IT bags in the world of puffy bags is from Bottega Veneta; and it has a chunky chain. Love!

Vintage vibe satchels

Satchels are loosening their collar for fall 2020. Look for soft leather from Chloe and Givenchy. Also look for 1970’s era logo looks from Gucci. These are the ultimate carry-alls for the fall 2020 season.

Pastel Hues and Neutrals

The color palette in handbags for pre-fall 2020 is offering pastels as well as neutrals hues. Look for shades of brown, white, black and grey for neutrals. Also look for pastel hues in blues, green, pink, and yellow.

Fall 2019 IT bags you need now

Drumroll please . . . the fall 2019 IT list is here, and there are four distinct bags on the list. These four IT bags for fall 2019 were spotted on the streets of New York Fashion Week, and they were favorites of street style photographers. In addition, celebrities and style stars across the country are reaching for these bags; you may find a few are already backordered, or waitlist only.

Let’s start with the biggest IT bag of fall 2019, the Bottega Veneta Pouch. This slouchy, daytime clutch was spotted the most on the streets of New York Fashion Week. It is the bag every style star is wearing. This is the number one IT bag of the season; and classic black is in stock as I write this! Fingers crossed it still is when you read this. This soft and fabulous clutch is priced just shy of $2500, so if this is way out of budget for you, there is an alternative. Mansur Gavriel has a similar soft, and slouchy clutch, priced just under $400. You can get on the waitlist here. Whichever style you choose, you will be the style star of the season.

Next in line is the cross body, or shall we say, small shoulder bag, of the season. If small bags are your jam, this is your IT bag of fall 2019! The Valentino VSling is a convertible bag which offers a strap that can be worn long or short. This enables you to wear this bag cross body, or “slinged” over your shoulder. I just picked one up in black, and will post a review next week; so stay tuned!

Are you looking more for a workhorse bag? Yeah, I love having one too. The Chloe Aby was also spotted on the streets of New York, and it is the ultimate workhorse bag of the fall season. It comes in small, medium, and large; so there is a size for you! I have one in black and have been wearing it non-stop since the summer season. It can be worn cross body or over the shoulder; and also on your forearm. It’s a great everyday bag; and it has an IT factor. Love that! You can read my review here.

Lastly, we have the fabulous YSL LouLou Puffer bag. This is a puffier LouLou than we have seen in seasons past. It also has a slightly slouchier silhouette. If chic shoulder bags with a classic vibe are your jam, this is your bag! Black is currently in stock, so grab one while you still can!
