How to relieve Planter Fasciitis pain

how to relieve planter fasciitis pain

Panter Fasciitis relief from top left: green balls / sandals with arch support / foot roller kit / hidden arches / over the counter orthotics / arch support compression sleeve /

If you have been following along the past two years, you know I went from a hip injury to planter fasciitis. Ugh. Unfortunately, the planter fasciitis has decided to stay awhile, which means I need to constantly manage my pain and not get too confident that everything is over.

In late April, early May, I went on two quick trips and did a lot of walking. My foot seemed fine, so I left my orthotics at home. Big mistake. It is now June, and my foot is still sore. I need to undo the damage I did from not wearing proper arch support over a month ago. Don’t do what I did. If your doctor gave you orthotics, wear them!

If you have not seen a doctor yet, then you might be wondering what orthotics are. They are specially made shoe inserts you can use inside your sneakers to replace the soles the sneakers came with. The orthotics have been specially made to fit your exact foot, so they are far superior then anything you purchase over the counter. This also means they are quite expensive and if your insurance is like mine, they are not covered. The out-of-pocket expense was well over six hundred dollars for mine.

Before treating any ailment, you should always see a doctor. This post does not replace visiting a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. I am not a medical professional, so what I am about to write is from my experience only and may not be beneficial to you. If you have seen a doctor and know that some of these treatments will help you, then read on!

Orthotics: We just went over orthotics. If your doctor recommended them and they are too expensive, you can try using the over-the-counter inserts. They are a fraction of the price and should provide some relief. Also, if you live near a running shop such as Road Runner Sports in Campbell, they can mold inserts for you to fit your foot; also for a fraction of the cost of orthotics. Just know, medical orthotics are always the best option.

Arch support compression sleeve: This is a magical product! I wear these with flat shoes and when I do barefoot exercises such as Pilates or yoga. I absolutely love these and they are a total game changer. I can exercise pain free when attending barefoot classes! Yoga is great too because there are stretches which help relieve planter fasciitis plain. So that makes these little sleeves even more important. I cannot live without them! Love!

Roller balls: These little lacrosse balls are great for rolling along the tendon to relieve inflammation and pain. Be sure to consult your doctor before using one, and make sure they tell you how to properly use one. I also love this roller ball kit with different types of balls for relieving pain. Again, speak with your doctor before use.

Birkenstocks: These are the most amazing shoes. I have a pair I wear solely as slippers around the house so the soles stay clean. I also have an outdoor pair. These are perfect for days when you want to wear sandals but also need your arch support. I recommend sticking to the suede because they are more comfortable than the leather; although the suede does get dirtier faster. Just a heads-up.

Well, that’s it! You can also ice your foot as directed by your doctor. I find these products help me relieve pain in my daily life, so hopefully they can help you too! Always check with your doctor, just in case you have a serious tear or other injury which is acting like planter fasciitis but is something else.

Thanks for stopping by!

XOXO
Cathy

Flat sandals for summer 2015

Flat Sandals for summer 2015 from top left:  blue sandals / ivory sandals / cognac sandals / spa sandals

Flat sandals are a staple in every summer wardrobe. They are easy to walk in, cool on hot summer days, and reflect trends from the runways in Paris, Milan, New York, and London. Love that!

This summer season, flat sandals are reflecting several runway trends which have proved to be hot on the street. The main trends in flat sandals for summer 2015 include:

Spa Sandals: The spa sandal is a huge trend this summer 2015 season. The spa sandal evokes the comfortable, relaxed vibe one feels after a day at the spa. The iconic spa sandal offers two large straps which criss-cross over the top of the foot. There is no back strap or heel on a spa sandal. Since this sandal type does not offer a lot of support for walking, look for thick footbeds, like the spa sandal pictured above, as well as cushioning. This will add a little bit of substance to the shoe, and make it comfortable for walking on a warm summer day.

Gladiator sandals: This trend will not go away! Gladiator sandals seem to fade in and out of style every few seasons. With the boho trend, and 1970’s trend, in full effect, the gladiator sandal has taken front and center as a huge trend in sandals for summer 2015. Although this style is available in heels, wedges, and flats, the flat sandal style is the most flattering style on one’s legs; and let’s face it, the easiest to walk in! Look for neutral colors or black.

Classic kids sandals: Remember in third grade when your Mom bought you a pair of purple sandals with an ankle strap and one thick strap of leather over the top of your foot? Your best friend has them in orange, and the girl who sat in the front of the classroom had them in brown. Well, they are back! This time, for adults. Look for this style in bi-colors, neutrals, shade of white, and black. Love this pair.

Birkenstocks: Did you think they went away? Nope! Birkenstocks are still hot on the street for summer 2015. This boho shoe style not only fits into the boho trend and 1970’s trend, it also fits into the 90’s trend which is still lingering in the background. Let’s face it, us GenXer’s lived in Birkenstocks in high school and college, while Pearl Jam blared on our stereos. Although often associated with boho-chic, Birkenstocks evoke a nostalgic feeling for those of use who came of age in 90’s. Look for new fabrications, colors, and metallics to spice up your summer wardrobe.

Overall, flat sandals for summer 2015 are offering comfortable styles, boho lines, neutral colors, and a little bit of sass to the warm weather season. What is your favorite style of flat sandals for summer 2015?

Summer 2014 is almost here! This means every Fashionista everywhere will need a fabulous pair, or two, of flat sandals.

Flat sandals are classic; and the perfect casual shoe for the hot summer months. In order to stay cool and fashionable, the perfect flat sandals for summer 2014 are a must! There are many trends for summer which can easily be incorporated into the seasons’ perfect flat sandals.

For summer 2014, the hottest trends include fringe, ankle straps, gladiator, black/white color blocking, studded (yes studded flat sandals are still around, crazy right?!), slides, flip-flops, and of course Birkenstocks! Yes, I said Birkenstocks. In case you have not noticed, the 1970’s favorite comfort shoe has returned to the streets and is arguably the hottest sandal on the planet right now.

Small tangent: Birkenstock’s have been around for longer than most of us reading this article have been alive. That being said, they have resurfaced as the years’ most popular sandal; even being referred to, at times, as hip! I will admit Birkenstock’s are incredibly comfortable and I did wear them in high school. (I get a pass for that. I grew up in Marin and was surrounded by hippies.) But, they are being touted as “high fashion” right now and designers everywhere have been scrambling to put their, inspired by Birkenstock, designs on the market. There are luxurious versions of the iconic comfort shoe from the hippie generation popping up in high-end price points and on luxury store shelves for summer. The “Me Generation” is scratching their heads, after all, the people wearing the shoes and designing the shoes are everything they stood up against in the 1960’s. But I digress. . .

Back to flat sandals for summer 2014! For everyone who is looking for regular flat sandals for the summer season, there are so many new styles and trends this year, that is can be daunting deciding which style to go for! If you plan to do a lot of walking this summer, ankle strap flat sandals will be perfect. (Birkenstock’s slip off your feet, they are not a walking shoe. In case you were wondering ;-)) For days when you plan to sit or lay by the pool, and you are interested in more of a shoe than plastic flip-flops, look for a brightly colored pair of flat slides. Other two hot styles this season, Gladiator and thong-style sandals, are great all-around shoes which will carry you through the summer months and keep your feet happy.

Flat sandals for summer 2014 can be worn with any of the seasons’ hottest trends from the streets and the runways. Look to pair flat sandals with jeans (skinny or boyfriend), shorts, maxi skirts/dresses and skirts above the knee.

I found a few fabulous pairs of flat sandals for summer 2014 around the web and assembled them into the widget below. I hope you love them! Happy shopping, and stay fabulous 😉
