The last model has walked off the runways of New York Fashion Week. As the fashion world moves to London, Paris, and Milan to continue fashion month, those of us who look closely to New York designers for inspiration are left with a new set of trends for the upcoming spring/summer 2018 season.

There are so many trends which seemed to inspire New York designers this season. We saw new trends, old trends, continuing trends, and confusing trends, for the upcoming warm weather season. Despite the large amount of trends, and inspiration, from New York designers for spring 2018, there were five trends which stuck out, and dominated the runways of New York.

Without further ado:

New York Fashion Week trends spring 2018: Menswear

Menswear inspiration has been a huge trend in fashion over the past few seasons. It is showing no sign of slowing down for spring 2018. Designers showed a large amount of menswear inspiration in the form of suiting, prints, tailored blazers, trousers, and shoes. Look for more menswear as we move out of winter, and into spring.

New York Fashion Week trends spring 2018: Clutches

Clutches are making a comeback for spring 2018. While they never really went out of style, designers have favored saddle bags, hobo bags, and satchels the past couple of seasons. For spring 2018, designers are looking towards small clutches.

Also of note; the fanny pack appears to be making a comeback. Let’s see if the streets like that one. I’m a little frightened by the thought.

New York Fashion Week trends spring 2018: Small Florals

Florals, I know. Soooo groundbreaking. Seriously though, florals are really small for spring 2018. Alice + Olivia, Zimmermann, and many more showed small floral prints for the spring season. No big flowers, only small ones; all squished together. Small, busy florals. Not groundbreaking, but noteworthy.

New York Fashion Week trends spring 2018: Silver and Metallic

Silver is the new metal du jour. For spring 2018 look for silver jewelry, silver accents, silver footwear, silver handbags, and silver metallic clothing. Silver is already a hot trend for fall, look for more in the spring 2018 season.

New York Fashion Week trends spring 2018: Cold Shoulders

Cold shoulders are not going anywhere for the spring 2018 season. Look for this trend from last season to continue into next year. There will be peek-a-boo shoulders, off-the-shoulder, strapless (no shoulder), cold shoulders; so many types of naked shoulders! In addition to cold shoulders, look for a continuation of ruffles surrounding these cold shoulders.

There you have it! The top 5 New York Fashion Week trends for spring 2018. In addition to these five trends, look for a continuation of asymmetrical lines, longer hemlines as well as mini skirt hems, two piece sets, and black/white combinations.

Handbags for spring 2018 will offer small clutches, shoulder bags/saddle bags, east/west totes, and <gasp> fanny packs.

When it comes to color, dark sea foam green, shades of yellow, grey, and white are hotter then hot. See the top 12 colors from NYFW by clicking here.

What do you think of the spring 2018 trends from New York Fashion Week?

Yes, that is a fanny pack. Several designers were showing them on the runways for spring 2018. Thoughts?

While spring 2018 was being sent down the runways at New York Fashion Week in September 2017, guests attending the shows carried the hottest handbags for the fall 2017 season. While I wasn’t able to capture an extensive gallery of photos showing the handbags being carried at fashion week, I did observe which bags made it onto the arms of the fashionable set, and which ones were glaring absent.

There were many types of IT bags carried by guests of New York Fashion Week. Some of the bags were classic IT bags such as the Chanel Boy bag, and the Givenchy Antigona (new to the classic category), while others were up and comers such as the Cult Gaia Ark bag, and the Mark Cross Benchley bag.

New York Fashion Week street style handbags are what dictate the IT bags of the new season.

Gucci had a huge moment last year, and it seems that moment is starting to fade. While the Gucci Marmont was the IT bag for last spring and summer, it was no-where to be found this season at fashion week. The Gucci bag showing staying power in the IT bag arena is the Gucci Dionysus.

JW Anderson has found IT bag status with his Pierce bag. The Pierce bag emerged last season on the streets of New York Fashion Week, and it showed up again this season. For fall 2017, the fashion week set preferred the JW Anderson Pierce bag in neutrals hues and red. It seems Pierce bag fans want their investment to have staying power; proving the bag will be around for several seasons to come.

Mark Cross is having a moment! The Mark Cross Grace bag has been around for eons; but this is the first time it was so dominant on the streets of fashion week. The Grace bag was spotted in several colors; both seasonal and neutral. In addition to Mark Cross’s iconic Grace bag, his up-and-coming Benchley bag was also splashed all over the fashion week streets. The Benchley was also spotted in both seasonal, and neural hues. Mark Cross is the handbag designer to watch for fall. He just rocketed from classic luxury to the world of IT bags.

Chanel is always a mainstay at fashion week, but the resurgence of the Boy bag took me by surprise. While the classic flap and 2.55 are always spotted at fashion week, season after season, the Boy bag went from IT bag status a few years ago, to “just another designer bag” status. This season, it seems to be making a comeback. Instead of the fashion set carrying it in bright colors, patent, patterns, and the like; the Chanel Boy bag was carried mostly in classic black, with a few neutral hues thrown in around town. This proves the staying power of the Boy bag.

Isn’t summer over? Of course it is in the fashion world. But, that didn’t stop guests of New York Fashion Week from carrying circle bags, and straw circle bags in general. Circle bags were a hot summer trend, and it appears the non-traditional handbag silhouette is staying hot for the fall season. There wasn’t one circle bag in general which stood from the crowd, but circle bags were spotted throughout fashion week paired with fall trends.

Playing off the straw bag phenomena, the Cult Gaia Ark bag, which was the IT bag of summer 2017, was also seen all over the streets of New York Fashion Week. This is a handbag trend which seems to be jumping seasons. If straw can be worn after labor day, why not bamboo?

The Givenchy Antigona was a popular, classic IT bag this season at fashion week. When I was in line for the shows, there always seemed to be someone next to me carrying one. I pointed out being “twins” to a couple of ladies, but they didn’t seem to think it was as cute as I thought it was that we were standing next to each other with the same bag. Oh well, not everyone thinks matching is fun. haha

I could go on for days about my love of the Givechy Antigona bag, but I don’t want to bore you.  Just know this, if you need a workhorse bag which is extremely durable, and comfortable, and which also has IT bag status; the Givenchy Antigona is what you need to invest in.

Can all the #ChloeGirls have a moment? Both the Chloe Faye, and the Chloe Nile, were present at New York Fashion Week. While a few Drew’s were sprinkled around, the Faye, medium size to be exact, and the Nile, in all sizes, were the Chloe bags of the moment.

There you have it! My apologies for not having a more visual post, but you can see what some of these IT bags look like from the shopping widgets below each description. Next season I will be at fashion week longer and will have some spare time to stand outside the shows and get photos for you. These are my observations from inside the shows, and standing in line for the shows, waiting for doors to open.

New York Fashion Week street style handbags are what launch bags into the IT bag arena. These are the bags to covet, and own, for the fall 2017 season and beyond. Which current IT bag is your favorite?

Packed for New York Fashion Week and what to expect

Where does the time go? It seems like I was just writing about the fall/winter 2017/18 collections from New York Fashion Week last February; and here we are, looking at spring/summer 2018!

My schedule this season is a little bit crazy; so I am unable to attend the full week of shows at fashion week. Instead, I am flying out a day late, and leaving a little bit early; but don’t despair, I will be squeezing in as many shows as humanly possible in order to bring you the hottest trends from New York for spring 2018! Yay!

My fashion week coverage will start Friday, so watch my social media channels to see what is happening on the runways in New York. It should be interesting to see what spring 2018 will bring to the world of fashion.

Hopefully we will see more ruffles, metallics, bright colors, asymmetrical lines, and fun prints. If resort 2018 has anything to say about spring 2018, there will be stripes, bright colors and prints, shades of red and pink, western/cowboy inspiration, off-the-shoulder tops and dresses, as well as an explosion of athleisure looks. Let’s see if the old adage of resort being a glimpse into spring holds true!

I have packed outfits for fashion week which are both fashion-forward, and comfortable. If you have read my previous fashion week posts, you might remember my constant complaints of tired feet, walking, and standing. I found last September that wearing booties with socks is far more comfortable then killing my feet in cute high heels. This NYFW I will be repeating this trick by wearing booties with socks. You can take a peek at what I packed below:

What’s in my New York Fashion Week suitcase:

My fashion week beauty routine is simple and quick. I don’t bother with masks or deep cleaning while I am on the road. I use a one step cleanser on my skin and simple makeup. I will be using both Chanel and Estee Lauder lipsticks for color, my favorite Laura Mercier Caviar eye stick, Chanel blush, Laura Mercier foundation powder, and this fabulous foundation by Estee Lauder. If you are looking for a long-wear foundation which won’t clog pores, dry out skin, or do anything annoying to your face, haha, this is the perfect foundation! I just started using it and I am in love! Check out what’s in my NYFW beauty bag below:

Thank you for stopping by, and stay tuned! I will be seeing a lot of shows, so I cannot wait to bring you my favorite looks from the runways; and at the end of fashion week, I will recap the hottest trends for you!

Which trends are you hoping to see this spring 2018 season? Any trends you hope will disappear and not come back for spring?

XOXO

Cathy
