NYFW street style handbags fall 2019: YSL shoulder bags

OK, so I took a ton of notes at fashion week to see which handbags were hot on the street. Unfortunately, I was so busy taking notes, I failed to snap a bunch of photos! Man, I am out of practice! Thankfully, I had enough sense to get this one photo of a YSL shoulder bag carried by Kali of In Spade Blog before the Nonie runway show at Spring Studios.

Every season there are several handbags which are favored by guests of New York Fashion Week. This season there seemed to be an overwhelming presence of YSL shoulder bags. By overwhelming, I mean you could hardly find any other trend in handbags on the street. This was the bag style favored by the fashion set.

While there wasn’t one stand-out YSL shoulder bag style, there was a general sense that you needed a YSL shoulder bag in your life; any style or model would do. Of course, with any trend, there are a few rules. The YSL shoulder bag could not be jumbo, or on the large side. The New York Fashion Week street style handbags rule of thumb this season was small, or medium; nothing large. Your YSL bag should be small or medium; and if your bag was not YSL, it should still be small or medium. Not nano, large, or jumbo; just small or medium. You should be able to fit your wallet, sunglasses and phone inside your handbag, if not, your bag is too small.

In addition to YSL shoulder bags, there were several versions of square handbags, train cases, and small lady bags on the streets of New York Fashion Week. Handbags offered nontraditional shapes, and were free of logos. PVC handbags were also prominent on the streets of New York Fashion Week. Also, anyone carrying Louis Vuitton was not carrying the monogram vernis. They were carrying LV bags which were recognizable, but free of logos. Take note.

Adding a touch of spring to a winter day at New York Fashion Week

Day two of New York Fashion Week was a ton of fun! The weather was warm; much warmer than I am used to it being at fashion week in February! Normally the temperatures are well below thirty, and there is always at least one day in single digits. This season, the temperatures were hovering in the fifties; much warmer than at home in the San Francisco Bay Area!

So, for day two of New York Fashion Week, I decided to wear a winter into spring look for a busy day of shows. In the morning, through to mid-day, this spring maxi dress from Chico’s was perfect for the weather. I didn’t need a coat! Was this the twilight zone?? Why wasn’t it freezing?? That morning and afternoon, I attended Fashion Hong Kong followed by Nonie, without a coat. This dress garnered several compliments from other show guests, and was the perfect weight for the the high fifties temperatures.

When evening was getting close, temperatures fell to the forties, so I threw on my 1970s style faux fur coat over my dress, and switched up my handbag to evoke a vintage vibe with my overall look. This was a fun way to make this spring maxi dress transition from winter into spring. It is so versatile! I attended Chiara Boni le petite robe that evening which was perfect for the outfit. She had a vintage vibe on her runway, so my vintage look worked quite well.

Since the day was busy, I never actually had a chance to sit down for a meal! After Chiara Boni, I wore my spring Chico’s maxi dress styled for winter out to dinner at Pepolino’s. It’s a fabulous Italian restaurant close to Spring Studios where the shows were held. Every season I enjoy their risotto and pasta. It is a must-try next time you visit New York!

My fabulous friend Dawn from Fashion Should be Fun took these photos with my new camera. They came out really good!

Spring 2019 shopping Strategy

spring 2019 trends

Spring 2019 is hitting store shelves, this means it is time to figure out what to keep from last year, and what we need to add to our closets in the new year. The runways brought us several new, and repeating trends for the upcoming warm weather season. Some trends made it from the runway to store shelves, while others, never made it off the catwalk. Here is a list of trends which have made the transition from runway to street for the spring 2019 season. Knowing these trends will help us all shop our closets, then, we can fill them in with what we need!

Spring 2019 shopping list: outerwear

Trench coats and athletic jackets are the two types of outerwear you will want to wear this spring 2019 season. Look for 1980s inspired track jackets, stadium jackets, and jackets in general. Classic trench coats will also be your go-to on non-athleiure days. Look for jacket length styles as well as coat length when shopping for the ultimate trench coat.

Spring 2019 shopping list: clothing

Athleisure is getting more and more popular as time marches on. Look for track suits, leggings with tops, and gym to street looks.

Anything with a 1980s vibe is hotter than hot. Look for neon hues, exaggerated sleeves, ankle boots, and gasp! Shoulder pads!

Cropped pants. How dare your pants brush up against your ankle! Wide leg pants through skin tight pants should be cropped. We need to see those fabulous booties, chunky sneakers, and colorful sandals!

Mixed print dresses are the ultimate spring dress style. Look for dresses with built-in mixed prints, v-necks, and asymmetrical lines.

Stripes are hotter than hot this spring season. Look for nautical stripes, wide, stripes, and all types of stripes.

Neon hues and pastel shades are the colors to look for this spring. Pastels may not be ground breaking, but they will be your go-to color palette if neon isn’t your thing.

Look for a continuation of menswear inspirations, blazers over jeans, plaid and mixed plaids, matching sets aka suits, and 1970s inspiration.

Spring 2019 shopping list: handbags

You can check out my full report on spring 2019 handbag trends here. In general, look for neon, pastel or black colors. Mixed colors are also a thing. Look for square shapes rather than last year’s circle, and think small but not nano.

Spring 2019 shopping list: shoes

Chunky and funky street sneakers are all the rage this spring 2019 season! Also, look for multi-color, bright footwear to brighten up your look. Kitten heels are also the go-to heel height this spring while boots are continuing to be a year-round trend; so cold spring days are solved with booties-love that!

There you have it! Look for lower priced items on trends which are continuing or seem fleeting. You can invest in classic trends such as trench coats and black handbags; that is a great way to spend your spring dollars. Since the 1980s are a growing trend, it is also a good trend to invest in this spring. When it comes to the 1970s, shop your closet or look for lower priced items since that decade’s influence may start to wane when we move into 2020.

Have a fabulous time shopping for spring 2019! Here are a few of my favorite things for the new, warm weather season.

Which trends are you excited about? Any you plan to stay away from?
