Rebecca Minkoff Edie Baguette review

baguette trend spring 2020

I love finding a handbag which fits into multiple categories. The new Rebecca Minkoff Edie Baguette is not only on trend, it’s a functional bag that serves multiple purposes. Love that!

One of the big trends for spring 2020, and 2020 in general, is the return of the baguette. We are seeing baguettes everywhere! This fabulous baguette by Rebecca Minkoff isn’t just your average baguette, it’s a convertible baguette. Oh yes, it’s three bags in one! Love!

The Rebecca Minkoff Edie Baguette is a cross body bag, it’s a retro under-the-arm shoulder bag, and it’s a clutch. Yup, that’s right! You can wear this bag on casual days as a cross body bag, amp up your look with a ’90’s shoulder bag vibe, or pair it with an evening ensemble. So while we are sheltering-in-place right now, it’s the perfect bag to wear cross body while going to the grocery store or pharmacy. You can also wear it cross body while taking a walk outside. Then, when the economy starts to open back up, you can wear it as a clutch to go out to dinner or a party. You can also wear it with the shorter strap over your forearm or shoulder. It’s a lot of looks in one, for a reasonable price under $250. Love that!

I love how this bag has two detachable straps. You can detach the one you don’t want to wear, or leave them both on and allow the one you aren’t using to drape down; giving the bag a street style vibe. So fun!

It also has a magnetic closure, so you don’t have to fiddle with the clasp as shown. That’s actually cosmetic. The hidden magnetic closure makes this bag easy in, and easy out. Perfect to wear everyday. Loving that!

The interior of the Rebecca Minkoff Edie Baguette offers just enough room for daily purse essentials such as wallet, lipstick, phone, keys, and sunglasses. It also features an interior slip pocket which is great for receipts, business cards, cash, or credit cards; in case you decide to not carry a wallet.

The Rebecca Minkoff Edie Baguette also has an exterior opera ticket pocket. This is great for receipts, and other slim objects you might want to reach for, or put away quickly, without opening up the bag. There are so many reasons why this bag is functional and practical, while still being on trend.

This is a fabulous bag to wear right now, and into the summer, fall, and winter seasons. It will definitely live longer than the season. This bag will also save us all money in the long-run since it is three bags in one! Plus, it fits into the bright bag trend, baguette trend, and multi-color trend for the spring and summer seasons.

Spring 2020 handbag capsule wardrobe from left: multi-color metallic Chloe bag (read review here) / small yellow tote (under $200) / black satchel (read review here) / small red baguette (under $250) / large and soft clutch (under $1000, hot IT bag) / Gucci phone case (read review here) / small black bag (read review here) /

OK, my spring 2020 handbag capsule wardrobe might be a little bit larger than what you would expect. That is because, as you know, I am a huge handbag fan!

For the spring 2020 season, I tried to touch on all the handbag trends I love. Metallic bags are huge this season, as well as brightly colored handbags.

Small is in. Totes, satchels, shoulder bags, and more are all shrinking for spring. Be on the lookout for small bags which still fit your wallet, keys, and phone. This cute little yellow tote hits two of spring 2020’s trend buttons; it’s bright yellow, and it’s small. Love that!

This little yellow tote bag also has a zipper closure, and a shoulder strap. Versatility is always a must!

The baguette is back, and you don’t have to buy the Fendi to rock this trend. This fun little red bag also comes in other colors. It’s affordable, and has two removable straps. It can be worn as a clutch, a retro style baguette, or a regular shoulder bag. Pick a strap to suit the style which matches your outfit the best! Or the mood you’re in, both work. 😉

Phone cases which are actually handbags are also a hot trend, as well as soft clutches. Remember the Bottega Veneta clutch which was spotted all over the streets of New York during fashion week in September 2019, and again in February 2020? Well, you don’t have to spend over a $1000 to rock this trend. The clutch pictured above is well under $1000 and it’s a hot IT item which stores are having trouble keeping in stock. Snag one while you still can! If not, get yourself on the wait list. It’s hotter than hot!

As far as the spring handbag capsule wardrobe is concerned, there is a bag for every occasion in this capsule. The metallic bag is perfect for evenings, but can be worn during the day too. Same with the small black bag. it’s great for daytime or evenings. The other bags are casual, and work well for different events, occasions, and daily routines. I am currently reaching for my black satchel, this little yellow tote, and my small black bag the most. Which bag would you reach for the most often?

Do you remember the Fendi Baguette? If not, it is an iconic IT bag which found fame when Carrie Bradshaw in SATC coveted one, only to see it get stolen off her arm on the streets of New York, close to a  generation ago. That episode helped launched an already popular handbag into infamy. The Fendi Baguette was coveted around the world, and the short strap combined with the east/west design of the bag, created a handbag trend everyone needed to be wearing.

In the 90’s, handbag straps went from long to short in a decade. The early part of the 90’s offered us long straps which were leftover from the 80’s. As the decade wore on, the straps on our bags shrank until our handbags were tucked into our armpits by 2000.

As the first decade of the century progressed, handbag straps started to lengthen again, to the point where our bags offered a 70’s vibe, or cross body convenience. But, as we head in 2020, the pendulum is swinging back in the direction of the baguette; possibly fueled by Fendi’s relaunch in 2017. A new generation of handbag fans is discovering the baguette silhouette, while those of us who lived through it are ready to welcome it back.

My 5 favorite baguettes

We are currently in a state of the IT handbag type, as opposed to the IT bag. Instead of needing that one bag, made by that one brand, we are in a time when handbag style is king. This is great when it comes to individual tastes and budgets, not so great if you are a seeker of the ultimate IT item. You might have to actually choose a bag from a sea of designs, rather than be guided to that one bag, by that one brand.

It’s interesting that the baguette style is trending as we move in 2020. The spring 2020 runways around the globe offered us a different view of what’s to come in the new year for handbags. The runway handbag trends for spring 2020 included the return of the bucket bag, pleated bags, the multi-bag, the insanely over-sized cross body bag, classic 70’s shoulder bags, disco inspired bags, straw bags, exotic skin bags, and large puffy pouches shown both as clutches and as shoulder bags. Baguettes were hard to spot. How did they rise to fame at this moment? Is the 2017 return of the Fendi Baguette finally catching some steam? Or are consumers tired of longer straps, and seeking something fresh and new; because everything old is new again, right?

In the case of the baguette, you can always gravitate towards the Lord of the Baguettes; the Fendi Baguette. Or, you can enjoy this new IT bag style with a design by your favorite designer, in your favorite price point. There are a lot of options! I’m deciding between splurging on the Fendi Baguette or snapping up the Coach version in a fun color. I have always liked this handbag style, and I do own a few from back in the day; just not by Fendi. Which do you prefer?

What do you think of the return of the baguette? Are you a fan of the short strap, or do you prefer a longer one?

If you are a baguette fan, what is your favorite way to wear your bag? Over the shoulder, inside the armpit? Or on your forearm, displayed for the world to see?
