The return of the baguette

Do you remember the Fendi Baguette? If not, it is an iconic IT bag which found fame when Carrie Bradshaw in SATC coveted one, only to see it get stolen off her arm on the streets of New York, close to a  generation ago. That episode helped launched an already popular handbag into infamy. The Fendi Baguette was coveted around the world, and the short strap combined with the east/west design of the bag, created a handbag trend everyone needed to be wearing.

In the 90’s, handbag straps went from long to short in a decade. The early part of the 90’s offered us long straps which were leftover from the 80’s. As the decade wore on, the straps on our bags shrank until our handbags were tucked into our armpits by 2000.

As the first decade of the century progressed, handbag straps started to lengthen again, to the point where our bags offered a 70’s vibe, or cross body convenience. But, as we head in 2020, the pendulum is swinging back in the direction of the baguette; possibly fueled by Fendi’s relaunch in 2017. A new generation of handbag fans is discovering the baguette silhouette, while those of us who lived through it are ready to welcome it back.

My 5 favorite baguettes

We are currently in a state of the IT handbag type, as opposed to the IT bag. Instead of needing that one bag, made by that one brand, we are in a time when handbag style is king. This is great when it comes to individual tastes and budgets, not so great if you are a seeker of the ultimate IT item. You might have to actually choose a bag from a sea of designs, rather than be guided to that one bag, by that one brand.

It’s interesting that the baguette style is trending as we move in 2020. The spring 2020 runways around the globe offered us a different view of what’s to come in the new year for handbags. The runway handbag trends for spring 2020 included the return of the bucket bag, pleated bags, the multi-bag, the insanely over-sized cross body bag, classic 70’s shoulder bags, disco inspired bags, straw bags, exotic skin bags, and large puffy pouches shown both as clutches and as shoulder bags. Baguettes were hard to spot. How did they rise to fame at this moment? Is the 2017 return of the Fendi Baguette finally catching some steam? Or are consumers tired of longer straps, and seeking something fresh and new; because everything old is new again, right?

In the case of the baguette, you can always gravitate towards the Lord of the Baguettes; the Fendi Baguette. Or, you can enjoy this new IT bag style with a design by your favorite designer, in your favorite price point. There are a lot of options! I’m deciding between splurging on the Fendi Baguette or snapping up the Coach version in a fun color. I have always liked this handbag style, and I do own a few from back in the day; just not by Fendi. Which do you prefer?

What do you think of the return of the baguette? Are you a fan of the short strap, or do you prefer a longer one?

If you are a baguette fan, what is your favorite way to wear your bag? Over the shoulder, inside the armpit? Or on your forearm, displayed for the world to see?

Chloe Aby convertible shoulder bag review

chloe aby review online

Have you been longing for a new IT bag from Chloe? I know I have! It has been a few years since I have seen a new handbag style from Chloe that caught my attention. Perhaps it has to do with what I need in my wardrobe, or maybe it is design driven; whatever the case, Chloe has caught my attention with their new Aby handbag for the upcoming fall 2019 season.

Introduced for fall 2019, the Chloe Aby handbag is both a throwback to Chloe’s first IT bag, and a nod to the future of the design house. Featuring a Chloe Paddington lock, a well-loved feature of the IT bag which launched Chloe onto the IT bag stage, the Chloe Aby offers a bit of nostalgia without repeating something that was hot in the past. Love that!

Around 2005, the Chloe Paddington launched onto the IT bag scene. It was an ordinary, soft and casual satchel with an extraordinary detail; a heavy Chloe lock. The lock is what caught everyone’s attention, and soon, the Paddington was the hottest handbag in town. To illustrate how popular this bag was, there were fake Paddington’s roaming the streets; just like the ever popular swap-meet Louis’s we have spotted for decades. This bag was on fire!

Then poof! The IT bag market heated up and the Paddington became yesterday’s news. When that happened, there was something dated about the lock, and people shelved or sold their Paddington’s in favor of newer styles. Chloe reintroduced the bag about 5-6 years ago, in the hopes of re-igniting what once was, but like the Fendi Baguette and the Dior Saddle bag, they were over before they attempted to re-start. <sigh>

But for fall 2019, and I hate starting a paragraph and sentence with the word “but,” but seriously, it has to be done! For fall 2019, Chloe has defied the odds and designed us a fabulous, casual satchel bearing the Paddington lock. The Chloe Aby satchel comes in two sizes; small and medium. I fell in love with the bag as soon as I watched the fall runway on You Tube. I knew instantly this bag needed to be in my wardrobe. I love the nostalgia mixed with the modern design. Plus, it looked like a workhorse! Love that!

Chloe Aby tote review

The Chloe Aby handbag is a great choice for an everyday bag this fall 2019 season. Not only that, it has the makings of becoming the next IT bag. After all, the handbag market hasn’t had a stand-out IT bag in quite some time. The Chloe Aby is ready to fill that void.

If you are looking for a solid, everyday bag, the Chloe Aby is it. The outside of the bag features a top handle, which is a hot fall trend, and also a shoulder strap. This gives the bag a casual look and versatility. It also has a soft silhouette which offers just enough stiffness to hold it’s shape without slouching. That really is the best of both worlds!

Inside the Chloe Aby, there are two main compartments which are roomy enough for a small book, bag of snacks for the kids, gloves on cold days, and more! Between the two main compartments there is a slim zipper pocket which is great for important papers, or theater tickets. In addition to large areas, the Chloe Aby also offers a slim interior pocket which is great for placing tickets, receipts, or a phone. It’s very practical and handy!

My one complaint about the new Chloe Aby bag, is the clasp. It is magnetic, but it also has to be lifted up and slipped down to get the top of the clasp out of the bottom lock. It has taken some practice, and I have gotten the hand of it, but just keep in mind you may to fiddle with it a few times before mastering the security of the magnetic clasp. It’s really easy to open when wearing the bag cross body; which is a plus! Other than that, the bag is easy to reach into, and practical for everyday use. This is why I chose the Chloe Aby in black. Black is a great, classic hue which will be easy to pair with any outfit I wear this fall season and beyond. The Chloe Aby is not going to be a one season bag, this will be a handbag which sticks around for several seasons; hopefully it stands the test of time like the Marcie! I really love this bag!

The return of the mini satchel

shore projects watch

They’re baaaa-aaack! Did you miss them? Or were you like me; a little bit relieved that bags got bigger so you could carry more stuff? Yeah, mini bags got old fast. So why in the world are they back? Perhaps they never actually went away. . .

While mini bags had their hey-day a few years back, many handbag fans could never jump on the trend. The mini bag requires a special kind of handbag connoisseur. One who only carries lipstick, a small set of keys, and a smaller smart phone. If you attempt to carry a wallet, sunglasses, or any other common purse essential in your handbag, the mini satchel would not allow it. It was quite unforgiving!

When bags crept up in size, taking us back to small and medium sizes, the mini satchel appeared to disappear into oblivion; until now. For some reason, there have always been hold-outs. Despite the size of handbags getting back to a more practical size, many handbag fans have stood their ground and continued to defy logic by carrying around teeny, tiny, little bags that often-times look like they would refuse a small set keys!

Designers and brands aren’t dumb, they can see a potential market. They figured out there were enough mini bag holdouts walking the streets to sustain a comeback. Boy, are they all making a comeback! Don’t get me wrong, I love a comeback story, but mini bags? Worse, mini-satchels? The structure of the satchel makes the bag harder to get into than a mini cross body bag with a nice zipper, or a mini hobo bag and the like. Satchels are often narrow at the top, right where your hand needs to reach for something. It’s a great way to chip nail polish, scratch your hand on a zipper, or become frustrated from the annoying mini opening of your mini bag. So much mini! Ugh!

Don’t get me wrong, mini bags have their place, perhaps even, the mini satchel. But, and this is a big but, there isn’t anything practical about a mini satchel. They seem ornamental to me. The only time I find a mini satchel practical is if I am dressed up for a special occasion and don’t need to carry sunglasses, car keys, or a wallet. When that is the case, the mini satchel needs to be dressy, if not formal. For those types of occasions, I tend to reach for a formal bag. Is it just me? Am I the only one who feels like one’s hand should fit inside one’s bag? Am I the only one that wants to fit my wallet in my purse?

It should be interesting to see if the mini satchel makes as big of a comeback on the streets, as it has on store shelves at this very moment.

What are your thoughts on the mini satchel trend? Is this a trend you enjoy wearing? Or are you like me, and you demand a bit more space inside your bags?

Thanks for stopping by!
