Stacy London Style Tour hits San Francisco Centre and gives the Bay Area fabulous style tips

Stacy London, best known for being the star of TLC’s “What Not To Wear,” hit Westfield’s San Francisco Centre this weekend and gave Bay Area Fashionistas her fabulous style tips. Stacy London presented fifteen of this season’s hottest looks from pencil skirts to plum to top handle satchels to platform shoes.

I attended the Stacy London style presentation at 1pm, September 17, 2011 at San Francisco Centre which was held under the dome; a fabulous historic relic from the old Emporium. The celebrity stylist gave audience members invaluable styling tips such as:

“Big collars help balance” out pear shaped bodies and belts can help create an hourglass shape. Stacy London also reminded the audience about the importance of wearing nude shoes to help lengthen legs and that “platforms are not going away.” She stated that shorter women should wear smaller platforms to avoid having the shoes “look like blocks” on one’s feet.

Stacy London also told the fashion-savvy crowd that “floppy hats” are a huge trend for fall. This is a great investment to buy now since this hat style was spotted on the spring 2012 runways in New York!

Wearing a large necklace? Stacy London says that stud earrings are your best friend; they can help make your outfit look finished without competing with your statement necklace. This is an important tip for anyone following the trends off the runways. Bold necklaces are huge for fall and they have already been popping up on the spring 2012 runways.

Other trends to watch for, and invest in this fall include faux fur, shades of plum, ponchos, relaxed knitwear, menswear, structured handbags (satchels), leather shorts (if you are under 30), matching cuffs or bracelets (one worn on each arm-think Wonder Woman!), teal and ombre.

Style quotes from Stacy London’s Style Tour at San Francisco Centre:

Buy outfits not individual pieces and you will always have something to wear.”

“If you are 5’4” and under, knee boots make you look like you are standing in a bucket.”

“The scarf is the number one pick when you don’t know how to accessorize your outfit.”

Stacy London also introduced the audience to Westfield San Francisco Centre’s “Style for Hire” team which is the famous stylist’s fashion consulting company. The “Style For Hire” team is available at San Francisco Centre for shoppers to take advantage of. The stylist team can help shoppers find an outfit within the shopping center for a special event as well as build an entire wardrobe. The “Style for Hire” team can also help shoppers audit their closets. For more information about Stacy London’s “Style for Hire” team at Westfield San Francisco Centre, please visit styleforhire.com

What did I take away from Stacy London’s Style Tour at San Francisco Centre? Well, I ran straight over to Nordstrom and bought a plum scarf! The scarf has one of the season’s hottest hues and is a great alternative to a necklace. Love it!

Plus-size fashion tips from the stars of TLC’s new show “Big Sexy”

TLC will premiere a new television show, “Big Sexy” on August 30, 2011 at 10pm ET/PT which will feature plus size fashion industry insiders Leslie, Tiffany, Audrey, Nikki and Heather. This amazing show will let viewers see a candid view of their lives as confident and sexy plus-size women who are making great strides in their fashion careers.

TLC was generous enough to provide us with ten fabulous fashion tips from the cast of “Big Sexy” to publish and share with you. The following text was written, provided and published with permission by TLC and the cast of “Big Sexy:”

1) Do not avoid tailored, woven fabrics: A lot of plus-size women avoid woven fabric because it has little to no stretch; however, clothing like pencil skirts and tailored jackets make plus-size women look amazing. The tailored look can make you look thinner, more toned and professional. With the sharper lines and better structure, people will take you more seriously. Knitted clothing (which has a lot of stretch) tends to look a bit too casual for most settings. – Audrey Curry, makeup artist and aspiring fashion designer

2) Shoulder pads look awesome on curvy women: Many women generally stay away from shoulder pads, but plus-size women with larger hips should embrace the strong shoulder look. Naturally, a woman’s shoulders should be a little wider than their hips. Shoulder pads, which come in all shapes and sizes, can make a large woman look more proportional and thinner. It’s best to experiment! Shoulder pads can be easily added to existing clothing, such as a blazer or a shirt dress. – Audrey Curry, makeup artist and aspiring fashion designer

3) Deodorant and baby oil are your friends: If you want to avoid the crazy chub-rub between your legs, roll on deodorant or dab baby oil on your inner thighs. You’ll no longer have to wear biker shorts under your dresses! Keep travel sizes in your purse. It does tend to wear off throughout the day. –Tiffany Bank, plus-size model

4) Only wear what makes you happy: If you feel happy, you look happy. Want to wear hot pink lipstick or patent red leather heels? Go for it. Fashion is all about you and how you want to express yourself. I enjoy wearing crazy nail polish because I love colors and colors make me feel good! – Tiffany Bank, plus-size model

5) Do not try to hide your body under big, shapeless clothing: This approach never works. Even with all the material, we still know that you are plus-size. Now you just look frumpy! Instead, wear clothes that define the best parts of your body. Defining your waist with a belt, for example, can accentuate your curves. – Leslie Medlik, fashion stylist

6) Do not follow traditional plus-size fashion rules: A lot of plus-size fashion tips are outdated. Liberate yourself. Follow a few trends that you like and will keep your look current. If you like stripes, go for it. You can wear anything with confidence. Confidence is the key to having great style! – Leslie Medlik, fashion stylist

7) Do not be afraid of stores that don’t typically sell plus sizes: A lot of plus-size women shy away from mainstream stores, in fear that they will not carry clothes in their size. How do you know unless you go in and try? I am a huge fan of Anthrolopologie and can easily pull off a large dress made out of knit or jersey. I can also fit into their XL and L tops. Fit is more important than what the size says. Try everything on before you make the purchase. – Nikki Gomez, plus-size model

8) …but remember to support plus-size designers!: Most plus-size lines are created by plus-size women for plus-size women. These designers understand the issues we have with clothing, and they know that we want to look our best at any size. You have to dress the body you have now. If you embrace your curves and feel good about yourself, you will work even harder to achieve your personal body goals (or just realize how beautiful and sexy you already are!).  Plus-size designer brand clothing is not only made for your body, but it also tends to be made better and last longer. – Nikki Gomez, plus-size model

9) The right undergarments are essential: Underwear are essential to dressing and significantly affect the overall look. It is extremely important to have on a great-fitting bra and beautiful panties. What is worn underneath will play a huge difference in the way you feel on the outside.  – Heather Roach, wardrobe stylist and bra/bikini designer

10) Wear your clothes and do not let them wear you: Stand up tall and put your shoulders back. Good posture and confidence is everything. Be proud of who you are and respect yourself. Love your voluptuous curves and know your best features. – Heather Roachwardrobe stylist and bra/bikini designer

Hand creams that work in every price range

There are so many hand creams on the market, that when it comes to choosing one, the task can be daunting. Many hand creams claim they will absorb and not be greasy; but most of those claims fall short when the hand cream IS greasy and does nothing for dry hands. So, in the quest for the perfect hand cream, Bay Area Fashionista tested several lines in varying price ranges and picked out the best, non-greasy hand creams we could get our dry little hands on.

Luxury Hand Cream:

It is well known that La Mer creates some of the most coveted creams on the market. The reason they are so highly coveted is not because Jennifer Lopez can attribute her glowing skin to Crème de La Mer, it is because the company’s products actually work.

La Mer The Hand Treatment comes in a slim tube which is surprisingly long lasting. A tiny little drop of hand cream moisturizes and heals dry skin. Although the hand cream is $70 for a 3.4oz tube, the high concentration makes this hand cream last longer than expected; easing the $70 price tag.

Verdict: Best healer of severely dry hands.

La Mer The Hand Treatment can be found at Nordstrom.

Mid-Price Hand Cream:

Sometimes it is not the price that tells you how well a product can work. Laura Mercier has created a hand cream that comes in the sweet, sugary scent of Crème Brulee. Laura Mercier’s hand cream is also highly concentrated, just like La Mer’s. This helps the small; 2oz tube last longer than expected since you only need a small drop to rub into your hands.

Laura Mercier’s hand cream actually creates a barrier against daily tasks which can dry hands. Wash dishes without gloves? We found if you apply Laura Mercier’s Crème Brulee hand cream first, the drying dish soap will not be able to ruin your skin. We also found that it works well on hands before lifting, playing tennis and swimming; all activities which can dry out hands.

Verdict: Best protector against daily activities which ruin hands.

Laura Mercier Crème Brulee hand cream comes in a 2oz bottle for $15 and can be found at Nordstrom.

Drugstore hand cream:

Burt’s Beas Shea Butter Hand Cream is a classic drugstore find that contains the always famous Shea butter; known for retaining moisture in skin. Burt’s Bees Shea Butter Hand Cream has a nice scent and is only greasy for about three minutes after application. The hand cream eventually absorbs into the skin and provides a nice and soft barrier to the elements. At $12.99 for a 3.18oz tube, who can complain?

Verdict: Most “bang for buck” hand cream. Does the job without the grease.

Burt’s Bees Shea Butter Hand Cream can be found at Target stores.
