The platform versus the flat sole: which will take over next year?

As designers send their fall collections down the runways for fall 2012, shoe fans everywhere are watching the sole of every pump and bootie that walks the catwalk. The flat sole is appearing to be dominating half of the runways, while the platform dominates the other half. Which one is it?

Platforms crept into style over the past five years, and just when forecasters thoughts the platform had run its’ course back in 2010, the style came back stronger, higher and more popular than before. The flat soled pumps which graced the fall 2009 and spring 2010 runways barely appeared on store shelves and women flocked to the highest platforms they could balance and shuffle down the street in.

The outcome for the fall 2010 runways? The platform dominated; and has been doing so ever since. What is it about the platform that is so alluring? Is it the added height? Perhaps platforms allow for a more artistic shoe? Is there a sense of strength from the added height off the ground? Perhaps. . .

It will be interesting to see what store buyers stock their shelves with this summer when fall 2012 begins to arrive at retailers worldwide. And when the flat soled pump is displayed prominently alongside a bigger than life platform pump, which one will the consumer reach for? Which one will you reach for?

New York Fashion Week trends from the runway for fall 2012

New York Fashion Week for fall/winter 2012/2013 has wrapped and left the fashion world with new trends to think about for the upcoming cool weather season. Designers showed a continuation of many spring trends on their fall runways such as color blocking, bright colors, daytime clutches and knee-length hemlines. Alongside the continuing trends, there were new styles to watch out for such as flat soled shoes, texture, kitschy details such as a car shaped clutch and a return to neutral and classic colors such as camel, black, burgundy and rich chocolate brown.

The most prominent colors shown during New York Fashion Week included black, chocolate brown, Tangerine Tango or orange, red, burgundy, yellow, varying shades of grey, camel, beige, cobalt and shades of green. As we shop for the spring season, these are important colors to watch for since they can turn spring items into fall items instantly; bringing longevity to one’s wardrobe.

Beauty secrets from Marchesa’s New York Fashion Week runway

Marchesa showed a stunning collection for the fall/winter 2012/2013 season during New York Fashion Week. Equally stunning were the models that walked the runway with natural faces and slightly metallic eyes.

The make-up at Marchesa’s New York Fashion Week show was done by Talia Shobrook for Laura Mercier and she has shared her backstage secrets with us! The following text was written and provided by Laura Mercier Cosmetics:

INSPIRATION

Marchesa’s Fall 2012 collection found inspiration in William Adolphe Bouguereaus’ famed 1878 portrait, “A Soul Brought to Heaven.” The classically angelic figures in the painting were brought to life in the collection through frothy tulles, embroidered brocades and pleated silks.

Talia Shobrook, the lead makeup artist for the show, drew from the otherworldly etherealness of the collection to create a makeup look that was “my vision of an angel, brought to life through a luminous palette.”

FACE

Shobrook stated “iridescent, porcelain skin was the foundation of the look and evoked the untouched perfection of angels.”

  • Talia first moisturized the skin with Laura Mercier Mega-Moisturizer Crème

LIPS

  • Talia then “applied a cherubic lip, with a stained effect to modernize the look.”
  • Talia mixed Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Merlot and Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Haute Red (NEW: Available Fall 2012) and applied to the center of the mouth
  • She then pressed in the color with her fingertips to allow the pigment to bleed outwards
