Pleated skirts take spring 2012 by storm

The pleated skirt is one of the most popular types of skirts for the spring 2012 season. This flattering style was spotted on many spring runways last fall and has taken over store shelves, and streets, by storm. The pleated skirt has been spotted in three different hem lengths and offers a flattering, soft a-line silhouette which works well on almost any body type; no wonder it is so popular!

The three types of pleated skirts for spring are hitting mid-thigh, knee length and maxi style. Pleated skirts are being shown in all of the bright colors for spring as well as neutrals such as black, beige and white. They are an easy way to color block and can also go from day into evening with a quick change from satchel to clutch.

The pleated skirt has also been spotted as the bottom half of a dress this season. While most dresses with pleated skirts are shown in knee-length styles, the pleated skirt has also appeared on floor length dresses and short dresses. On a dress, the knee-length hem is the most flattering for most body types.

Pleated skirts can also be worn casually with flats, flat sandals or even flip flops as well as dressy with glittering high heeled sandals. The pleated skirt is so versatile and universally flattering; it would be a shame to skip this trend!

We assembled the three lengths of pleated skirts for spring in the Polyvore set below. Which length do you prefer?

Fall 2011 Fashion Trends: Below the Knee Hemlines

Hemlines have taken a tumble; below the knee that is. One of the biggest trends on the fall 2011 runwayswas the feminine or “Ladylike” trend. This trend showcased vintage inspired designs with hemlines that hit just below the knee. The skirt length was the only part about the hemlines that showed any consistency. Hemlines were shown in every form from straight around to asymmetrical to wrap.

One trend in skirts that has made a comeback this fall is the fluted hemline. This trend was huge in 2004 and it has come back with a vengeance. The fluted skirt is a pencil skirt with a sudden flair from just below mid-thigh to below the knee. This sassy style has a 1940’s vibe and works perfectly with the season’s biggest handbag silhouette; the top handle tote.

Dresses and skirts with the new hem length are also being shown in a variety of fabrications including silk, sheer chiffon, velvet and wool. In addition, patterned fabric, plaids and solid colors are being shown on skirts; giving every Fashionista a chance to rock this trend for fall.

The new, longer hemline is a breath of fresh air for those who have loathed the shorter than short hemline in recent seasons. Although the below-the-knee hemline might appear matronly for those who love their minis, the fluted hemline offers a body conscious silhouette that is very demure-think Dita Von Teese!

The silhouette for fall’s new hemline varies drastically depending upon the designer. Skirts are being shown in every shape imaginable from full skirts to body hugging, curve boasting pencil silhouettes. Whichever shape you prefer, you cannot go wrong. This season look for a silhouette which compliments your shape; as long as the hemline hits below-the-knee you are on-trend and fabulous for fall!

Wondering how to wear the new hem? Always wear heels since the below the knee length can shorten you. If you are under 5’4” opt for a platform pump and stay away from ankle straps or ankle booties which will shorten your leg. Also, since leg coverings are du rigueur for autumn, try to keep the color of your skirt, leg coverings and shoe close together. This will also help elongate your legs and keep them from looking short. As always, happy shopping and stay fabulous

Fall Fashion Trends: Pencil Skirts

The vintage trend for Fall is in full swing and pencil skirts are taking store shelves by storm. Although designer runway shows focused more on the full skirt when highlighting the 1950’s trend, store buyers have opted to stock the shops with the pencil skirt. Perhaps buyers did not think Fashionistas were ready for the full skirt? One has to wonder since Fashionistas seem to be very excited about the vintage trend for Fall. Although full skirts are over-shadowed by pencils skirts, full skirted dresses are everywhere and might the full skirts warm-up entrance into Fashion for the upcoming Spring season.

The pencil skirt is a 1930’s and 1950’s style that offers a high level of sophistication to a woman’s wardrobe. Pencil skirts can be worn in conjunction with the minimalism look for the office or spiced up with the luxe look of the 1950’s for a dinner date or theater outing. The pencil skirt can also be played up for daytime casual looks with a chunky knit sweater, military boots and 1970s handbag.

Pencil skirts have been swinging in and out of fashion every eight years or so; much like the natural economic cycle. For some reason, they seem to enjoy a resurgence during the down cycle, rather than the up cycle. Coincidence perhaps? The last time Fashionistas flocked to stores for pencil skirts was in the late 1990’s just before the dot-boom raised real estate prices and salaries to unsustainable levels. Perhaps the pencil skirt is favored by designers during recessionary times due to the fact that is it simple, easy to sew and provides a staple wardrobe piece for women that can be worn casual or dressy with different tops, shoes and accessories. The pencil skirt is also practical enough for the office yet flirty enough for a evening out.

Designers such as Chanel, Valentino, Loro Piana, Dolce & Gabbana, Nina Ricci, and Stella McCartney are showing pencil skirts for Fall in fabrics from gabardine to lace to satin to leather. The pencil skirt length is varying from barely touching the top of the knee to barely gracing the bottom of the knee cap. This offers two lengths for Fashionistas who are not interested in visiting the alterations shop. In general, women under 5’4″ should opt for the top of the knee cap while taller women can wear the longer style without worrying about looking short.

Pencil skirts can be found in complicated fabrics such as lace and they can also be found in simple and timeless fabrics such as polyester and gabardine. If you are looking for something uncommon, it is worth spending money for an unusual or luxurious fabric. If you are looking for a pencil skirt that is timeless and simple, there are plenty of shops that offer inexpensive pencil skirts in basic colors and fabrics which will make the perfect addition to your wardrobe. Banana Republic has pencil skirts in black, grey and tan for under $100 at regular price, if you find one on sale the price could be under $30. Target has pencil skirts for under $30, but beware of the fabric and look for dark colors such as black. Inexpensive fabric looks better in darker colors. You might also try to shop your closet. The pencil skirt was huge in the late 1990’s and you might find one in the back of your closet. The pencil skirt is a great addition to any women’s wardrobe and worth investing in for this Fall. Happy shopping and stay fabulous.
