Embracing overalls after all these years

fashion over 40bay area street styleproenza schouler hava satchelhow to wear overalls

Wearing: fuchsia ball earrings / Chanel sunglasses / lipstick c/o Estee Lauder “Blase Buff” / pale pink crew neck tee (so amazingly soft!) / denim overall jumper dress (shorter style under $75) / rose gold cuff / dark brown leather strap watch / Chanel summer nail polish / black satchel / embroidered guitar strap (on major sale!!) / Gucci slides (also love this pair under $80)

Raise your hand if you remember how hot overalls were in the late 1980s and early 1990s?! Oh yes, this was a hot trend. It was back when Kriss Kross made you “Jump! Jump” and we were told to don’t go chase waterfalls. Where I lived, in Marin County, people wore overalls with one strap undone, and styled with Converse All-Stars. In other parts of the Bay Area, I remember seeing people topping off the look with a crooked cap. I always admired the trend, but never actually wore it. This time around, I have decided to give it a go; but in a more mature, Silicon Valley way.

The first time overalls were a huge trend, I shied away from it because I am short. I always felt like overalls looked better on taller people. Over time, I have figured out that just because I am short, or have wider hips, doesn’t mean I can’t find a way to wear a trend, or look, I admire. If I can find the right style, or find it in petite, then I can rock it all I want!

I don’t feel like full length pants work well on me when it comes to overalls. I can wear overalls with shorts, or a skirt, but the ankle length pants make me look shorter, and wider, then I am. Since this is the case, I have embraced the overalls trend by wearing a jumper, or overall dress. Love!

This long jumper is absolutely perfect. Since it has a slit in the front, the silhouette of the dress is broken up, resulting in appropriate proportions. There is also a waist on these overalls, so I feel like my figure isn’t hidden underneath a denim tent.

A denim jumper is easy to dress up or down. In these photos I am wearing it with my favorite pair of slip-on loafers, and a casual satchel. It can also be paired with wedge espadrilles, and a beachy Cult Gaia Ark bag, for a warm weather look. If you wanted to go full-force 1990s, you could even tie a neckerchief around your neck, and find a vintage Dooney and Burke bag to top off the look. Voila! Instant ’90’s vintage style.

It was pretty foggy the day we snapped these photos, but the dress is lightweight enough to be worn on sunny days too. I am looking forward to wearing it more often as the weather warms up this summer!

What do you think of the 1990s overalls trend? Did you wear it the first time around? Will you wear it this time?

Casual in a kimono

Wearing: ivory tassel earrings / Chanel sunglasses / YSL lipstick / beige tee shirt / ivory lace kimono (currently on back order, also love this one under $20)/ rose gold cuff / Chanel summer nail polish /  watch / Cult Gaia handbag / scarf tied to bag c/o Banana Republic (sold out, also love this one) / distressed boyfriend jeans / Christian Louboutin espadrilles (old, similar pair under $100) / fragrance

The weather is getting crazy hot! We literally went from 50’s last week, to 90’s this week. I feel like I am melting away! That being said, I am not really sure what possessed me to wear jeans on a scorching hot day, but somehow I survived.

I love wearing jeans and a tee shirt on casual days when something like hot weather makes me want to crawl up on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn, and binge-watch reality TV. These photos were taken on one of those days. Instead of being able to snuggle on the sofa, I had to work, take my daughter to home-school chess class, run some errands, order my son’s birthday cake, and the list goes on! This meant I could not just throw on something comfortable, and hide at home; I had to look presentable. Ho-hum

Since jeans and a tee-shirt were the mood I was in on this fine, sweltering hot day, I decided to elevate my comfortable, casual look with my go-to espadrilles, and this kimono. Luckily the holes in my jeans created a make-shift air conditioner, and the kimono felt so light and airy, this outfit turned out to be fine in the scorching 92F heat. Shocking!

Despite being wedges, I have to admit, espadrilles are SO comfortable. They have become my go-to comfort shoe on warm days, casual days, or anytime I need to walk a lot, yet look put together in the spring or summer seasons. These wedges do the trick! Although they are old, they are still comfortable, and in great condition. I have a similar pair in black, which is priced under $100. I bought them last year ,and have been wearing them again this season. I linked to the beige version of them above in my outfit details. They are really comfortable for walking, standing, and on sweltering hot days when leather shoes rub feet the wrong way. No blisters from these puppies!

Did you have a season change suddenly where you live? If so, were you ready? I sure wasn’t! haha, I still can’t find my sandals from last year, I know they are stuffed in the back of my closet somewhere!! haha

They call me mellow yellow

Wearing: ivory tassel earrings / Chanel sunglasses / lipstick c/o Estee Lauder Sly Wink / dress c/o Shein (under $20!!) / rose gold cuff / Cult Gaia bag / Chanel summer nail polish / Christian Louboutin espadrilles (old, shop similar espadrilles here under $100)

So this is the yellow dress. THE yellow dress I had planned to wear at the rewardStyle “Escape to Tulum” pool party a couple of weeks ago. It was in my suitcase, and I was ready to wear it! Unfortunately I could not wear it because I forgot to pack my strapless bra. Ugh! Total faux-pas.

I did wear it shortly after returning from Dallas to my friends house for some yummy BBQ. We snapped a few photos in front of our oh-so-picturesque garage door before leaving the house. I didn’t want to start peacocking at my my friend’s house, so it was better to snap a few photos at home before we left. I really wanted to share this dress with you!

Mustard is a hot color trend this season, and it is a new color for my closet. I tend to gravitate towards shades of blue, pink, purple, and green. Of course, I wear my share of black and white too! This season, I decided it was time to break out of my normal color pattern and try the mustard trend. I am so glad I did!

Do you know what my husband said when I came down the stairs in this dress? He said, “Wow, that’s a really nice dress. It looks pretty on you. Aren’t you overdressed?” haha This is a casual dress silly! I was surprised he said that because he tends to like form-fitting clothing, or short hemlines. It was really nice to hear him compliment a maxi dress! Love that!

This will be a really fun dress to wear during the spring, and summer seasons. It looks cute for a pool party, backyard BBQ, or as a beach cover-up; plus this mustard dress is under $20! Love!

So have you ever packed an outfit, or a dress, for a trip, and not been able to wear it on the trip, only to wear it later on?
