NYFW street style: big girl barrettes

nyfw street style feb 2019

pictured: wearing three vintage barrettes circa 1990s. See full post.

The 1990s are one of the current decades of influence when it comes to both runway trends, and street style trends. One of my favorite trends in the 1990s was to wear big girl barrettes. It is such an easy way to pull back your hair; especially coming off the big hair trend from the 1980s and very early 1990s. At that time, we wore lots of hairspray to create hair-styles which were quite high maintenance. While barrettes can appear to be a lot of effort, they are really easy to put on, and adjust throughout the day; unlike big hair finished with half a can of hairspray. Three cheers for ditching hairspray in the mid-1990s!

Since I knew this trend was hot and current, I decided to bring a few barrettes I kept from the 1990s. I spent money on them back in the day, and since I loved them so much, and they are small, it was easy for me to keep them tucked into the back of my jewelry box. I have found over the years, if you love something, and it goes out of style, but you can’t bear to part with it; just store it! Everything old becomes new again, and there is nothing more fabulous than your own vintage items. That being said. . .let’s get back to talking about barrettes!

Big girl barrettes were everywhere on the streets of New York Fashion Week. While you didn’t see them on the runways, they were a runway trend from 2017, they have finally caught on and hit the streets. The most popular way to wear 1990s-style barrettes on the streets of fashion week, was far from the way we wore them in the 1990s. In the ’90’s we wore one to three barrettes on one or both sides of our head, up high towards our part; side part to be exact. In 2019, the barrettes are being worn down low, just above the ear. Instead of wearing them on both sides, this time around only one side of your head should have a barrette.

The barrettes must match! The most popular barrette style was to wear two matching barrettes side-by-side, just above the ear. In the 1990s we wore coordinating barrettes that played well together. Now, in 2019, if you wear more than one barrette they need to be exactly the same. I guess I missed the mark on that one since I blended three different barrettes together; hey, at least I wore them above my ear! So, I was only 50% wrong. haha If it weren’t for my friend Laura from Have-Need-Want, I would have worn them ’90’s style, close up to my part. She schooled me right away. haha, thanks Laura!

Here are examples of how to properly wear big girl barrettes:

Of course, you can wear one barrette by itself too. It must be worn just above the ear; no-where near your part. Another option is to wear a low ponytail and fasten it with a barrette. This is a vintage hairstyle which became popular in the 1970s and lasted through to the 1990s. Of course, in the 1980s, if your ponytail was fastened with a barrette, there was a giant bow attached to it. haha So many bows in the 1980s! But I digress. . .

The types of barrettes worn on the streets of New York Fashion Week included sparkling rectangles, oversize snap barrettes, circles, and barrettes adorned in pearls. So, if you are looking to find the perfect barrette to wear right now, these are the styles to look out for! I found a few fabulous ones which evoke NYFW street style vibes online and assembled them into the shopping widgets below. I hope you love them!

July 2018 beauty favorites

summer hair care tips

Summer is in full swing, which means our skin and hair are exposed to the elements. It also means travel, warm evenings outside, and drying air conditioning. To combat these summer beauty obstacles, I have added a few fabulous products to my beauty arsenal for July 2018.

As you know, I receive quite a few press kits in the mail featuring new beauty products. I can’t review them all; to be frank, I don’t always like them all. So, starting earlier this year, I am doing one monthly round-up of my products from press kits which I love; and find myself actually using. The following products are from press kits. I fell in love with them so decided to share them with you. As always, I only share what I love!

Elemis Lily & Lionel Luxury Travel Kit

elemis travel beauty kit

Elemis is turning into my favorite skin care brand. I am addicted to their pro-collagen marine cream. It is my go-to daytime cream which I apply every morning. When Elemis sent this travel to me, I was thrilled! It contains a travel size of my daily cream, and additional products I enjoy using. I’m super excited to use this travel kit for an upcoming vacation later this month. You can find this fabulous kit online here for under $100.

Also this summer, Elemis has introduced a new collection of dynamic resurfacing products. My favorite product from the collection are the pads. They are so easy to use and do a great job of  smoothing out my skin. Five stars!!

Garnier Fructis Hair Mask Collection

garnier hair masks review

I just started to color my hair a few months ago in order to cover up the stray grays popping up on my head. Keeping my color looking vibrant is a little bit of a challenge in the summer since I am outside a lot, and in the pool often. These new masks from Garnier are a life saver! Think of them as an intense conditioner. They restore moisture to the hair which is lost when out in the sun, or in a chemical filled swimming pool. I’m totally addicted to these masks! My favorite is the coconut extract scent. It works wonders on my summer hair! Love!

Urban Decay “Born to Run” makeup collection

urban decay summer makeup

Warm evenings out on the town mean a new color palette of makeup! I’m loving everything from the “Born to Run” makeup collection by Urban Decay. The colors are great late-summer hues which will transition into fall easily. The lipsticks are moisturizing and the eye shadow palette has so many colors-it’s like an eye shadow candy store! Love that!

Super Mario Bros X Shu Uemura hair care collection

How cute are these Super Mario Bros themed hair care products by Shu Uemura! My son is a huge Super Mario Bros fan, and my daughters enjoy playing the game to keep my son entertained. It really has become a family game! So when Shu Uemura told me about their collaboration with Super Mario Bros, I knew this was something I needed to check out!

This special collaboration has resulted in a limited edition Shu Uemura X Super Mario Bros collection. This collection includes cleansing oil shampoo, cleansing oil conditioner, nourishing protective oil, and master wax.

The Super Marios Bros theme comes to life in this collection as the Japanese duo take beauty enthusiasts on a pixelated adventure to help Princess Peach, and to bring peace back to Mushroom Kingdom with the Super Mario cast of characters; along with a variety of colorful makeup and hair-care products.

My kids love, love, love this theme; and want to steal these hair care products from my shower, but no! These are mine! Although, I can tell my middle daughter has been using the cleansing oil shampoo, and the cleansing oil conditioner. The bottles have been going down, and her hair smells suspiciously similar to the Super Mario Bros x Shu Uemura collection. . . .hmmmm. . . curious.

If you love Super Mario Bros, or someone on your holiday gift list is a huge fan, definitely check this collection out! You can find the hair-care collection online here.

The Mario and Luigi plushies in the photo above belong to my son. They fit nicely in a stocking! You can find Mario here, and Luigi here.

Isn’t this the cutest collection ever!!
