Goodbye 2011 and all the trends we are happy to leave behind

Happy New Year! 2011 is coming to an end and as we get ready to ring in 2012, let’s reflect on the tired trends from 2011 which are not continuing into the new year, and celebrate those fabulous trends which we will see more of in 2012.

Bye-bye 2011!

Hair feathers and tinsel: While feather extensions and tinsel were favored more by ages 16 and under, a few adults here and there flocked to their hair stylists and had the horrific things attached to their heads. Thank goodness people saw the light and had those things removed. Adios!

Black shoes: Color is the new black. Store black for next year, everyone is bored.

Capes: This fleeting trend never really caught on. While we all ran out and bought a cape, it barely left the closet. Where were we flying to anyway? So last year. Buh-Bye.

Hooker dresses: Tight dresses which barely cover the derrière are so last year. 2012 is all about looser and more flattering silhouettes; plus no-one wants to see your bottom no matter how hot you are-I’m not kidding.

Tights with daisy dukes: While this trend was mainly spotted in Southern California during the fall of 2011, girls wearing tights under cut-offs and daisy dukes was only hot for 24 hours. Just say no. Thank you.

Hello 2012!

Color blocking: While this trend continues from 2011, it has come front and center for the new year. Bring on the multi-colored shoes, handbags and garments! Smile and don’t take it too seriously, this trend is all about F-U-N!

Bold Jewelry: Another continuing trend from 2011. Going back to the mid-1900’s, the new mindset is that “bigger is better” in 2012.

Ankle breaking platforms: The bigger the platform, the hotter the shoe. Flat soles are so two years ago. This trend is not for the faint of heart, make sure you wear it to locations where you won’t have to do much walking. Go BIG!

Clutches: The hottest handbag for 2012 is the clutch. Daytime, nighttime, anytime! Look for bright colors, multi-colors and sparkle. Your clutch should be seen

Hats: Topping off your look with a hat is all the rage. Look for floppy and colorful hats for everyday and semi-formal attire. For evening events, go royal and try a kitschy fascinator. Hats are fun-make a personality statement.

2012 is all about FUN and making a cheerful, lighthearted statement with your attire. Look for happy bright colors, mixed pastels, fun florals, conversation starting prints, unique jewelry and a hat! Careful in those platforms-pack a pair of flats just in case the balancing act becomes too much

How to get the Dolce & Gabbana runway beauty look at home: Backstage with Pat McGrath

Dolce & Gabbana showed their spring 2012 collection during Milan Fashion Week on September 25, 2011 and left Fashionistas everywhere wanting to re-create the runway make-up looks worn by the models during the show. The collection celebrated Italian culinary culture and Mediterranean traditions which was shown through the designing duo’s playful red hot pepper prints, pasta adorned accessories and pastel crocheted fabrications.

In order to capture this vibe in the make-up worn by the models on the runway, make-up artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath used Dolce& Gabbana make-up in spring 2012’s vibrant and intense hues from the new Passion Duo Lipstick and Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation.

Here is how Pat McGrath made up the models backstage at Dolce & Gabbana:

Cheeks:

Using a Dolce & Gabbana make-up brush, McGrath applied small amounts of “Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation” to the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin of the models. She blended the foundation by moving from the center of the face outwards in order to create a flawless base. Then, McGrath used Dolce & Gabbana blush in “Provocative” and “Rose.”She swept the blush over the apples of the models cheeks.

Eyes:

The Dolce & Gabbana Eyeshadow Quad in “Femme Fatale” was applied to the eyes and then lined on the lids in “black” and “coffee” which created definition and made the models’ eyes pop. To finish off the look, McGrath used “Secret Eyes Mascara” in black to add volume to the lashes.

Lips:

There were two shades of Dolce & Gabbana’s “Passion Duo” lipstick used on the spring 2012 runway during Milan Fashion Week: “Imperial” and “Sensation.” The lipstick gave the models’ lips both moisturizing pigment and a sheer gloss.

Nails:

The nails on Dolce & Gabbana’s spring 2012 runway were in two of the season’s hottest hues: “Dahlia” and “Wild Green.” Both colors will be “must have’s” for the spring 2012 season.

Domenico Dolce: “This season we were inspired by the charm and beauty of Southern Italy; the food, the smells and the sense of occasion. After all, this is at the very heart of our culture and heritage and is so dear to us.” Stefano Gabbana agrees: “This collection symbolizes our love for the Mediterranean spirit; from the distinctive illuminations that adorn every street and the fragrances and tastes of Mediterranean food. We see this as true Italian beauty.”

Pat McGrath took this inspiration backstage and brought the designing duo’s love for traditional cuisine and heritage to life with effortlessly glamorous make-up which embodies the Italian spirit. “I just love how the simple yet chic make up look we have created complements the stunning SS12 catwalk collection. I love the references to food in the collection and how the makeup look accompanies this; plump red tomato lips, deep aubergine and fresh green nails looked amazing and using the new Creamy Foundation and passion Duo shades was so exciting and really enhanced the look we were trying to achieve. The signature Dolce & Gabbana inspiration and heritage was again ever present on the catwalk, and I feel the vivid yet sophisticated make up really worked to bring the whole collection to life.”

How to get Nina Dobrev’s hairstyle from the 2011 Emmy Awards

Nina Dobrev wowed the audience and fans at the 2011 Emmy Awards when she arrived on the red carpet in a Donna Karan gown with side-swept hair. The actress’s side-swept hairstyle seemed to be a trend on the Emmy’s red carpet as additional celebrities such as Julia Styles were spotted arriving at the awards show wearing the hairstyle.

Celebrity hairstylist Fabian Lliguin and creator of Rahua Haircare has given us his step-by-step tips to re-create this red carpet hairstyle at home:

  1. On dry hair apply Rahua Conditioner from mid shaft to hair ends, comb product through completely.
  2. Use medium-sized hot rollers and roll hair in sections. Let the rollers cool completely before removing.
  3. Let hair fall naturally and create a clean part to one side.
  4. Brush through hair lightly once to smooth and shape curls.
  5. Bring the length of the hair to the opposite side of the part to rest on your shoulder.
  6. Use a finishing spray to hold the style.
  7. Touch up fly-aways with Rahua Conditioner, and you are ready for the red carpet!
