New York Fashion Week has officially come to an end. This means the fashion world has been left with a whole new list of trends to look forward to for the upcoming fall/winter 2016/2017 season. While we saw many continuing trends from past seasons walk down the catwalks, we also saw new styles to look forward to, and covet, for the cool weather season.

There were many, many trends on the New York Fashion Week fall 2016 runways, so to make it less overwhelming, I have narrowed it down to the five most significant trends to covet for the fall 2016 season. Without further adieu . . .

1 Stand out in TEXTURE

Texture is a loaded term for the embellishments designers offered up for the fall 2016 season at New York Fashion Week. As the top trend of the season, designers mixed fabrications, added embellishments, showed hand-sewn beadwork, small mirror embellishments, lacework, fur (real and faux), soft and structured fabrics mixed together, and layers of texture.

You can mix texture on one piece of clothing, or you can layer multiple pieces with differing textures. However you rock it this fall, mix it. Texture that is. 😉

2 Rock your inner Bohemian with FRINGE and peace out

Protest your favorite cause, and peace out because with the 1970s trend in full swing, fringe in all forms is a hot trend for fall 2016 from New York. Look for long fringe on longer pieces, and short fringe on jackets, dresses, and tops. Fringe has been reinvented on shorter pieces. Instead of traditional fringe, string or fabric, look for fringe beadwork as seen on the Custo Barcelona runway, and also the Marcel Ostertag runway. Shake shake shake, and show off your fringe!

3 Don’t be blue, just wear SHADES OF BLUE

Don’t let grey skies make you blue this cool weather season, instead, wear shades of blue! As much blue at once as humanly possible! Designers for fall 2016 in New York loved pale blue, medium blue, bright blue, and navy. Look for pieces in one shade of blue, or layer them together for a cool, blue look. You cannot go wring with blue for fall 2016. It is the hip color of the season.

4 Get groovy with 1970s INFLUENCE

Can ya dig it? The early 1970s were in full force on the runways for fall 2016 at New York Fashion Week. Look for carry-over, short hemlines from the late 1960s, and very 1970s midi lengths, and maxi lengths. We will see athleisure suits, flowing fabrics, wide-leg trousers, blazers, wrap skirts and dresses, and a general groovy vibe. Peace.

5 Stock up on staples because NEUTRALS RULE

Every designer in New York showed several neutral looks for fall 2016. Instead of playing with colors, they played with texture. There were all black looks on Custo Barcelona’s runway which offered mixed texture, and several choices for the perfect little black dress at Leanne Marshall. Designers showed black and white together, grey and black together, shades of grey mixed together, all-white, all-grey, and all-black. The top three neutrals for fall 2016 are definitely black, grey, and white.

Want to mix it up? Add a pop of blue or red (bright or burgundy) to break up the black, grey, or white you will be wearing. Otherwise, you cannot go wrong mixing these three neutral colors together this fall.

*There you have it! The top five trends from the New York Fashion Week fall 2016 runways. Of course, there were far more trends than what I mentioned above, but these are the trends which you will find most often when you head out to the stores to shop for fall 2016.

Easy ways to prep for fall 2016:

  1. Invest in a pair of wide-leg trousers in either black, grey, or white.
  2. Invest in a jacket or coat with texture in black, grey, pale blue, or navy.
  3. Get one fringe piece to rock. You can get a fun jacket, cocktail dress, or top to pair with a black midi skirt, or mini skirt. Just remember to shake shake shake!
  4. Invest in at least one textured piece in lace, beadwork, embroidery, appliques, or faux fur.
  5. Change up your hemline. If you favored midi skirts last year, rock a mini dress or maxi dress.

Other notable trends for fall 2016 from the New York Fashion Week runways include: softened autumn hues, shades of red, shades of mustard, large bracelets stacked on the arm, choker necklaces, mixed metals, metallic fabrics, open shoulders, sheer fabrics, occasional bright hues, mixed prints, bomber jackets, athleisure, leisure suits, small handbags, suede shoes, lace-up clothing and shoes.

That’s a wrap! What were your favorite trends from the New York Fashion Week runway for fall 2016?

Loafers, creepers and oxfords for fall 2015

From top left: black oxfords / oxblood creepers (under $100!)/ black creepers (I own these and love them!)/ stacked heel loafers / low heel loafers (under $200!)/ iridescent creepers

Loafers, creepers and oxfords are a huge trend for the fall 2015 season. With the menswear trend continuing from last year, it is no wonder that this trend in shoes is still hotter than hot.

Creepers, loafers and oxfords not only complete a menswear inspired ensemble, they also offer a nod to 90’s inspired styles which are still very much on trend on the streets. Oxfords, loafers and creepers were a huge trend in footwear in the early 1990’s. So it is only natural that this trend in shoes return when waistlines on denim are on the rise, cut-outs on jeans are considered du rigueur, and crop tops are perfectly acceptable shirts.

The fabulous part about this footwear trend, is that it is comfortable! The lug soles found on loafers, creepers and oxfords offer extra comfort for the footbed. They also offer traction in icy conditions, and during rain. Love that!

Creepers, loafer and oxfords can be worn with both casual attire, and business casual ensembles. They look fabulous with boyfriend jeans, overalls, and full or a-line skirts. This is considered the “street version” of the trend.

For a menswear look, oxfords, loafers and creepers look amazing with full or wide leg trousers paired with a blouse, shirt or sweater. An unstructured blazer could complete the look if one needed an extra layer in the office. This is how the trend was shown on the runways for fall.

The lug sole is an important aspect of this shoe trend. Creepers, oxfords and loafers for fall 2015 can be found with traditional, flat soles; but these are considered a more classic version of the style. For the fashion-forward version of this shoe trend, look for 90’s friendly lug soles. You will love the lug sole since it adds height, like a platform, and grips the ground during inclement weather. Love that!

I found a few fabulous pairs of oxfords, loafers and creepers around the web and assembled them into the shopping widget below. I hope you love them! Happy shopping, and stay fabulous 😉

Nicole Miller sent her spring/summer 2016 collection down the New York Fashion Week runway on September 11, 2015. The collection was playful, edgy, and street art inspired. Loved it!

To compliment Nicole Miller’s spring 2016 runway collection’s edgy vibe, butter LONDON’s lead manicurist, Katie Jane Hughes, created a cutting-edge nail art design which worked perfectly; both complimenting and completing the collection.  According to Katie Jane Hughes, “I created this bold nail look to play off of the street art inspired clothing in the collection. Black nails and edgy details are going to be a trend for spring. Spring beauty this season isn’t about playing by the rules.”

The result was amazing. The nails offered a graphic, splatter-effect with a pop of color which mimicked bold street art and graffiti found throughout Nicole Miller’s spring 2016 collection.

Since this nail look was so fabulous, Katie Jane Hughes and butter LONDON have shared with us the backstage secret to re-creating Nicole Miller’s spring 2016 runway nail look at home! Here are the amazing tips, using nail polish from butter LONDON:

Designer: Nicole Miller

Lead Manicurist: Katie Jane Hughes

The Scoop: The graphic, splatter-effect nail art featured a pop of color that mimics the bold street art and graffiti patterns found throughout the collection.

The Design – here’s how Katie created the look:

  1. Apply two coats Nail Lacquer in Cotton Buds.
  2. Dip a bobby pin into Nail Lacquer in Union Jack Black. Position the bobby pin over the nail and blow through the middle to create a splatter effect on each nail.
  3. With a new bobby pin, repeat the process with Nail Lacquer in Easy Peasy (NEW – launching in April ‘16) on various nails on both hands.
  4. Lastly, apply one coat of Hardwear P.D. Quick Topcoat to create a high-shine finish.

How fabulous is that! To shop everything you need to re-create butter LONDON’s nail art look on the Nicole Miller spring/summer 2016 runway, please scroll through the photos below and click on a photo for more information.
