What is being sustainable when it comes to fashion? It is a popular buzzword we hear often when people talk about manufacturing, farming, energy production, etc. While it has a lot to do with the production of goods and services, it is also related to how we, as consumers, actually consume.

Think about things you have purchased in the past, which ended up hanging in your closet unworn. Have you ever pulled something from the back of your closet only to find the tags still hanging on it? Yeah, we have all been there. There is no shame in making a mistake with a purchase, we are human, and have items in our closets we only wear once, if at all. This can be helped.

Back in the 1990s I used to buy something because I loved it, but I didn’t really think about where and when I would wear that item. So, you know the story. Said item would hang, unworn, in my closet. I had to put a stop to my habit. I worked really hard to not only think about where and when I would wear something before buying it, but how long would that item last? Was it good quality? Would it last past one season? Was the style timeless? If it was overly trendy, I would put it back on the shelf. I found myself saving a lot of money, and I created a much smaller wardrobe which was more sustainable over time. That is the ultimate goal.

When internet shopping entered the chat, I was thrilled! It really is an easy way to curb spending and really think about something before purchasing it. I always put something I want in my shopping cart and then walk away from my computer. If I still want it the next day, and can justify the purchase, then great! If not, I delete it. I have found nine times out of ten, I delete what was sitting in my cart. Love that! In the 1990s, those items would have come home with me, and very rarely would they have been returned.

In addition to being careful when shopping, a sustainable closet also contains clothing and accessories which can be used over and over again. It is important to buy things which transcend trends and can be re-integrated into one’s wardrobe every season. This is why it is important to shop your closet every season before buying new items. You might find the color of the year or the perfect top from two years ago to update your jeans.

Of course, not everything we buy will be a timeless hit! Sometimes an item seems like it will integrate perfectly into our wardrobes, and other times it’s a bomb. This is when we need to sell or donate the items so that they can have a new life and make another Fashionista happy. Unless an item is heavily damaged and beyond repair, it should not be thrown in the garbage. We don’t need to fill our landfills with our old clothing and accessories. If it can be worn again, it should go to new a home, if it can be upcycled, it should go to someone who upcycles and creates new items. This is being sustainable in reference to our wardrobes.

I am going to start an exercise in being sustainable here on the blog. If I am a consumer for anything, it is handbags! I am quick to admit, I own too many. My justification is that I have two daughters and my handbags will go to them when they are older. That being said, I do sell the bags I no longer wear, so they do find a new home and life after me.

For this exercise in being sustainable, I am going to change how I post about my handbag capsule. Instead of featuring my newest bags in a seasonal capsule, I am going to start featuring my bags on rotation each month and include one from the archives. Instead of a five-year-old handbag sitting in my closet, I am going to pull out an unused bag and put it into rotation each month to show how investments are supposed to be used! haha I need to use my investments! I challenge you to do the same. Pull out a different bag each month and integrate it into your wardrobe each month. Let’s work on being more sustainable together.

Thanks for stopping by, and when we all shop for fall, take inventory of your closet first, then make a list, and lastly, shop for what you need. We can all build a timeless and sustainable wardrobe together.

What is Investment Dressing

What is investment dressing? You may have heard people talking about investing in a handbag or a piece of jewelry, but have you heard of investment dressing? This is something I have toggled back and forth with since I entered college and started shopping on my own. Investment dressing is purchasing clothing and accessories to create a long-term wardrobe. It transcends trends and seasonal pieces allowing you to build a full wardrobe you can wear for years and years.

The concept of investment dressing allows you to build a timeless wardrobe which avoids fleeting trends, and helps you save money in the long term. Instead of buying trendy items every year, you can wear the same trousers, blazers, shirts, sweaters, etc. for years and years without spending money on new items. This also allows you to invest in higher quality items since you will have more money to spend on one item instead of an entire wardrobe.

You may have noticed bloggers and online magazines talking about capsule wardrobes; both seasonal and classic. Even I have jumped on the capsule bandwagon! The capsule itself is a concept which helps you trim down your wardrobe to basics which can be used over and over again, season after season. It is a lesson in mixing and matching so you can create countless outfits out of a few articles of clothing. Of course, when you read about these capsules, they always show new items, including my capsules!

The point of a capsule, as well as investment dressing, is not to purchase new items every season, but to be able to reuse what you have in your closet. Shopping your closet is part of investment dressing! When you see a capsule, look at what is in it. Is the writer showing straight leg jeans? Wear the pair you already own, you don’t need to purchase the new pair pictured in the article. Are they showing a black blazer? Use the one you already own, if it’s vintage, even better! So on and so forth, you get the idea.

It can be tricky to stick to investment dressing. When I started this blog, I was still a faithful investment dresser who concentrated on building a timeless wardrobe. Once I started to get more into blogging, it was really hard to stay timeless. I fell into a trendy trap and started overbuying items which did not stand the test of time. Now, I look at my closet and I am sad to see things I cannot wear anymore. So, I took a deep breath last spring and decided to go back to my wardrobing roots and stay on course with investment dressing.

What if you like trends? You can still invest in your wardrobe and reflect certain trends. One of the easiest ways to stay on trend while building a timeless wardrobe is to look at current color trends. You can invest in a classic sweater for fall which transcends time yet purchase it in a current color. Stay away from overly trendy colors such as lime. You will see colors in the color palette which transcend time and can be worn during the year. Those are the colors to invest in each season.

When it comes to colors, don’t be afraid! I know some people live in a beige and white world, please don’t! Colors keep things interesting and can even evoke emotions! For example, yellow makes people happy and blue creates calm. Red keeps you moving and green evokes feelings of peace.

Sometimes it is fun to add a trendy item to a classic wardrobe. When you do this, don’t spend a ton of money on it. Look for something on sale or at a reasonable price. Try not to succumb to a trend and overbuy it. Remember, you want to build a wardrobe with classic pieces, not cycle through it every season or two.

Investment dressing is also a fabulous way to build a wardrobe when a recession is looming. Yup, I said it! While we may not fall into a big one, we are experiencing inflation and a rise in interest rates. This is a good time to invest in a timeless wardrobe so you don’t feel the need to spend on clothing and accessories if we do head in that direction. Love that about investing in a timeless wardrobe!

What is your current style mood? Are you feeling like trends are your thing? Or are you in the mood to create a timeless closet?

Thanks for stopping by, and stay tuned for more investment dressing type articles this year!

How to dress during June Gloom

california casual outfit ideas how to dress in the fog

Wearing: statement earrings / sunglasses / black tee / silver bracelet / casual tote bag / summer nail polish / casual pants / espadrilles / (not pictured: scarf / cardigan sweater) /

June gloom is here! If you are wondering what I am talking about, June Gloom is something which happens every year, during the month of June. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we get an excessive amount of fog during the month of June; just when we think summer is starting.

School has ended, the kids are ready to jump in the pool or head to the beach and boom! We all wake up to a blanket of fog which does not burn off until early afternoon; making the beach or the pool a no-go. Bummer! This is why foggy weather in the month of June is called, “June Gloom.”

On the flip side, June Gloom offers the perfect weather for taking a hike, working in the yard, and working out outside. Since it is June, the temperatures hover in the high 50’s and 60’s. This makes it cool, but not cold. It is great outdoor weather as long as you are wearing the correct layers.

You might be wondering why I am talking about layers, yet, in the photo above I am not wearing any layers. Well, I am not sure why I took off the top layer for the picture! Haha, is that a blogger fail? Yikes! Picture this outfit with a scarf, cardigan sweater or lightweight fleece. That is how to dress during June Gloom.

I love wearing lightweight pants when we have foggy weather. They are lightweight enough for the moderate temperatures, and for when the fog burns off, yet they cover enough so that I don’t get cold from the fog. These lightweight pants are perfect to wear all day when we have foggy mornings and mild afternoons. Top the pants off with a tee, scarf or sweater, and it is the perfect foggy day outfit.

My favorite scarf is this one, and I also love this cardigan.

So that’s the formula! Lightweight pants and tee topped off with a scarf or cardigan. A casual tote bag is key because you can place your scarf or cardigan inside once the fog burns off and you don’t need to wear it anymore.
