Fall 2012 fashion trends: get kitschy

The kitschy trend began in spring 2012 when designers such as Prada and Kate Spade showed the lighthearted and fun side of fashion. Prada created an entire collection based on inspiration from vintage cars while Kate Spade designed handbags which mimicked swimming pools and pineapples. For fall 2012, more serious designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg have joined in the kitschy trend and taken their designs to the fun side of the spectrum.

The fall 2012 runways gave us handbags shapes like dominoes, cars, fruit and every shape imaginable. In addition to obvious pictures and shapes, designers showed designs with unexpected embellishments and fun types of trim.

Although some designers, such as Dolce & Gabbana, designed serious and rich looking collection for the fall seasons, other designers had fun with their creations and created conversation pieces.

This fall, the easy way to integrate the kitschy trend into your wardrobe is with a handbag or jewelry item. Earrings such as Twisted Silver’s “Beach Earrings” are a great way to add some fun to an ensemble and show that although it is fall, summer will never end. Kitschy handbags such as Diane Von Furstenberg’s domino clutch are also a great way to add some lighthearted appeal to dressier attire and keep people talking.

Fall 2012 fashion trends: Shades of dark blue and navy

Neiman Marcus has declared Navy Blue the “new neutral” for the fall 2012 season. Here at Bay Area Fashionista, we could not agree more. Shades of blue, from vivid medium blue through to navy, were spotted on the runways in Milan, Paris, London and New York; and store buyers seem to have stocked their shelves with the hue for the fall season.

Blue and navy blue are considered pleasant colors and tend to look fabulous on every skin tone, and with every hair color imaginable. Blue and navy are also easy shades to match with other colors and neutral tones. Navy blue and blue are being shown on everything imaginable including shoes, handbags, clothing and jewelry. In fact, lapis jewelry has become immensely popular and is an easy way to invest in something classic which also fits perfectly into the dark blue trend for fall 2012.

The one thing to consider when shopping for blue or navy, or pulling out an accessory or garment from a previous season, is the shade of navy or blue. Try to stay away from extremely dark navy blues which are difficult to tell apart from black. The lighter shade of navy is what is hot for fall 2012. Also, make sure your garment or accessory is not obviously from the spring season. Stay away from anything with ropes or with a nautical feel for fall.

Fall 2012 shoe trends: the smoking shoe

Fall 2012 is rolling into stores as we speak and one of the biggest and newest trends in shoes for fall is the smoking shoe. An offshoot of the continuing menswear trend, the smoking shoe is a flat shoe based on a man’s smoking slipper. The women’s version is being shown in the same silhouette and with many of the same materials as the men’s version with the exception of an outdoor sole underneath.

Smoking slippers are being shown in many fabrications for the fall season. Suede and velvet are proving to be the most common fabrications, although there are exotic, leather and fabric versions on the market to suit anyone’s taste.

The top of the smoking slipper, in general, may offer an embroidered emblem or design which adds to the richness and allure of the leisure time style. Although not dominant on the runway at all, the smoking slipper is a favorite of store buyers for the fall season and is taking store shelves by storm. The style is an interesting alternative to the delicate ballet flat and may take the place of the feminine style for the fall season as the menswear trend gains momentum this cool weather season.

Smoking slippers are a casual shoe style which can be worn mainly with jeans and pants; although more daring Fashionistas may style the smoking slipper with skirts. Since the smoking slipper is decidedly masculine, its’ natural look is with more masculine ensembles.

We found a few smoking slippers from around the web and assembled them into the Polyvore set below in order to help inspire your smoking shoe shopping for the fall season. Hope you love it!
