The Academy of Art University showed their fall / winter 2015 /2016 collection during New York Fashion Week on Saturday, February 14, 2015 in The Theater at Lincoln Center. There were fifteen designers who presented ten collections; four of which were collaborations between Fashion Design and Textile Design students at AAU. On the runway, we viewed eight womenswear collections, one mixed menswear/womenswear collection, and one menswear collection.

It is always thrilling to watch the Academy of Art University runway show at New York Fashion Week. These talented and creative students are learning and expanding on their creativity right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. To be able to see what current students and recent graduates are designing, is nothing short of amazing. This is the future of the fashion industry!

The fall 2015 collection from the Academy of Art University featured cutting-edge silhouettes, outstanding textures, and a fresh take on how to use textiles in fashion. The sweaters you see in the photos above are actually woven with strips of leather; not yarn. You can see a better view of the textiles in the IMG Fashion video below.

According to Simon Ungless, Executive Director of the school of Fashion, “This group of designers focused on transformation. They used fabric manipulation and printing techniques to change the inherent qualities of textiles to create new textures and surface qualities. There is a focus back to the body and wearability in silhouette, which the designers have utilized advanced tailoring techniques to achieve.”

The Academy of Art University designers who presented their work at New York Fashion Week for fall 2015 included; Emmanuelle Ciara Jones, Ghazaleh Khalifeh, Christian Willman, Xiaowei Liu, Stella Xingyu Hu, Han Tang, Tam Nguyen, Erin A.F. Milosevich, Paulina Susana Romero Valdez, Kevin C. Smith, Andrea Nyberg, Ozanhan Kayaoglu, Farnaz Golnam, Xue Yang, and Oom Terdpravat.

Asia Fashion Collection showed their new collection for fall / winter 2015 / 2016 on February 14, 2015 in The Salon at Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week. Asia Fashion Collection features designs from Vantan Design Institute. As a result, the collection features innovative and fresh designs from multiple designers from the institute.

Designers from Asia Fashion Collection created edgy designs which pushed the boundaries of traditional fashion. The designs fused artistic expression together with wearable art; creating a thought-provoking collection which transcends seasonal trends; and what we think fashion should be. Love that!

The creations on the Asia Fashion Collection runway at New York Fashion Week were playful; fusing together modern prints and silhouettes with personal expression. Designers also played with volume which created flattering drape, silhouettes, and overall ensembles. The collections inspired onlookers to think past trends and traditional style in order to take oneself back to a time when getting dressed was fun, playful, and personal.

Isn’t this what fashion should be? Art as opposed to commercial marketing platforms? Thought to ponder. . .

Mara Hoffman sent her fall / winter 2015 / 2016 collection down the New York Fashion Week runway on Saturday, February 14, 2015. The cool weather collection was a fresh take on Mara Hoffman’s classic style; offering a new color palette, and silhouettes with traditional Mara Hoffman prints and texture. Loved it!

Mara Hoffman showed soft neutrals, calm colors, and prints on her fall 2015 runway. A move away from bright colors and complicated prints, the collection offered the same travel inspired vibe we come to expect from Hoffman; with a fresh twist. Hemlines were long and fabrics were flowing. Texture was soft and noticeable; while maintaining an understated look. This collection was more street worthy than previous collections we have seen from Mara Hoffman’s.

Her overall past collections instantly take you away to an exotic location; making many of her clothing perfect for vacations, travel, beach days, and pool parties. For fall 2015, Mara Hoffman’s collection is still travel inspiring, but it can also be easily worn on the street; making it her most versatile collection yet! Love!

I was instantly drawn to her neutral prints and flowing fabrics. Her cozy knits evoke feelings of romantic walks on the beach during cool fall evenings or mornings; yet offer the option to walk off the beach and into a neighborhood eatery for dinner or brunch.
