Carmen Marc Valvo showed his fall / winter 2015 / 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week on February 15, 2015 in The Theatre at Lincoln Center. The collection was filled with shades of black, red, white and grey. There were school-yard plaids on gala gowns, bright and cozy furs, and a vibe reminiscent of childhood.

I was fortunate enough to be sitting in the second row for Carmen Marc Valvo’s show at New York Fashion Week; I was especially fortunate since my DSLR wasn’t working at the time and I had to rely on my iPhone to capture these photos. The texture on the fabrics and fur was amazing. Carmen Marc Valvo used the finest cashmere, organza, taffeta, mink, flannel, and wool gauze on his clothing. The details were beautiful and included silver with Shadowplay diamonds, white sapphires, white agate, white quartz, black spinel, bead-work, and more. It was a feast for the eyes, and the collection instantly transported you to a red carpet event, or gala event, where you could wear such finery.

Carmen Marc Valvo was inspired by school-yard memories for his fall/winter 2015/2016 collection. He included the following poem as part of his inspiration for the show:

“Lasses and Lads

Intartan plaids

Dressed up in the latest fads

Hoping one day to be grads

Lads and lasses

In schoolyard glasses

Skipping rops and

skipping classes

Memories of playground retorts

Being lousy at sports

and too many reports

Mmeories of cheering stadium bleachers

Mean-spirited teachers

And Sunday school preachers

Memories of apples

And school-marms

Mother’s loving arms

And long lost innocent charms”

We will definitely be seeing many of Carmen Marc Valvo’s gowns on the red carpet later this year. To learn more about Carmen Marc Valvo and his work, please visit CarmenMarcValvo.com

Vivienne Hu showed her fall / winter 2015 / 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week on Sunday February 15, 2015 in The Pavilion at Lincoln Center. Her collection featured soft autumn hues, asymmetrical lines, texture, and soft fabrications.

Vivienne Hu’s coat collection featured on her runway looks were easily some of the best coats shown during New York Fashion Week. During Vivienne Hu’s runway show, her coats were show stoppers. There were beautiful quilted coats, fur trimmed coats, sleeveless coats, capes, and edgy overcoats. Beneath the coats were sleek silhouettes which fused together uptown sophistication and downtown rock n’ roll. Love it!

The Academy of Art University showed their fall / winter 2015 /2016 collection during New York Fashion Week on Saturday, February 14, 2015 in The Theater at Lincoln Center. There were fifteen designers who presented ten collections; four of which were collaborations between Fashion Design and Textile Design students at AAU. On the runway, we viewed eight womenswear collections, one mixed menswear/womenswear collection, and one menswear collection.

It is always thrilling to watch the Academy of Art University runway show at New York Fashion Week. These talented and creative students are learning and expanding on their creativity right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. To be able to see what current students and recent graduates are designing, is nothing short of amazing. This is the future of the fashion industry!

The fall 2015 collection from the Academy of Art University featured cutting-edge silhouettes, outstanding textures, and a fresh take on how to use textiles in fashion. The sweaters you see in the photos above are actually woven with strips of leather; not yarn. You can see a better view of the textiles in the IMG Fashion video below.

According to Simon Ungless, Executive Director of the school of Fashion, “This group of designers focused on transformation. They used fabric manipulation and printing techniques to change the inherent qualities of textiles to create new textures and surface qualities. There is a focus back to the body and wearability in silhouette, which the designers have utilized advanced tailoring techniques to achieve.”

The Academy of Art University designers who presented their work at New York Fashion Week for fall 2015 included; Emmanuelle Ciara Jones, Ghazaleh Khalifeh, Christian Willman, Xiaowei Liu, Stella Xingyu Hu, Han Tang, Tam Nguyen, Erin A.F. Milosevich, Paulina Susana Romero Valdez, Kevin C. Smith, Andrea Nyberg, Ozanhan Kayaoglu, Farnaz Golnam, Xue Yang, and Oom Terdpravat.
