Booties are one of the hottest fall 2018 shoe trends on the street, and they are also one of the most classic form of autumn footwear. Booties for fall are fabulous because they can be paired with skirts, dresses, and pants. They may just be the most versatile style of footwear for the fall season. Love that!

The fall 2018 season is full of new bootie styles. Western inspiration is huge this season, and you will see tons of cowboy inspired footwear hitting store shelves. I love how you can find designers who reinvented the cowboy boot for fall, as well as took inspiration from the style and incorporated traits of it into a more classic bootie style. If full-blown cowboy boots aren’t your thing, look for styles with western inspiration, and a more a classic silhouette. This is what I will be doing! I have my eyes on this pair and this pair.

Split shaft booties were a hot trend last year, and they are showing no signs of slowing down this year. Look for several designer takes on the split shaft booties trend for fall 2018. I own this comfortable pair and this pair from last year, currently on a deep discount, which are also comfortable.

One of the big bootie trends from last year, which is also continuing this year, is the sock bootie trend. Look for more skin tight bootie styles to appear on store shelves this year.

Combat boots are also a big trend for fall in the wide world of boots. Look for lug soles booties, hiking boot inspired booties, and chunky, funky boots. You may also notice some 1990s Dr. Marten inspiration on store shelves. Grab your Doc’s and pop in a Nine Inch Nails CD; it’s not the twilight zone, your high school concert style is back!

You may also notice studs lining the perimeter of many bootie styles this upcoming fall season. While full blown studded styles are bit too heavy for autumn, studded lines and outlines are fresh and right for fall. I love this pair.

Fall 2018 shopping strategy

Fall 2018 is just starting to trickle onto store shelves, this means we need to shift our shopping focus to a cooler season; and ignore the heat wave outside! The fall season is showing us both old and new trends. Store buyers have chosen what they think consumers will love from the runways and stocked stores with those trends and items. What buyers thought wouldn’t sell, won’t make it from the runway to the street.

The first thing we all need to do before we shop for fall, is to shop our closets. Check out my how to shop your closet for fall 2018 post before making a shopping list for the autumn season. After you read it, come back here!

Now that you have shopped your closet and you know what you have for fall, you can start making your shopping list! When making your list, and checking it twice, always omit any trend that doesn’t fit your personal style. You want to make sure what you buy, you will love and wear often.

Without further ado, here is your fall 2018 shopping strategy:

Fall 2018 shopping list: Outerwear

The fall 2018 season is bringing us new and old favorites when it comes to outerwear. The types of jackets and coats you need for fall include single breasted car coats, trench coats, moto jackets, plaid menswear blazers, and teddy coats.

 Fall 2018 shopping list: Clothing

Clothing for the fall 218 season offers both repeats from last fall, and new trends. Look for shades of yellow, green, blue, red, purple, and lilac. Black, grey, and white are your key neutrals, followed by a soft medium brown.

You will want to fill your closet with wrap shirts, wrap dresses, stripes, fall florals, leopard print, pencil skirts, fluted skirts, asymmetrical hemlines and lines, menswear, plaid, western themed looks, cropped pants, skinny pants, trousers, skinny jeans, and clean boyfriend jeans. Ditch the distressed look.

Fall is pumping up the volume, so look for 1980s style shoulders, puffy sleeves, and exaggerated sleeves. Matching sets are also staying in style, so look for suits, sets, and anything matchy-matchy. You may even spot handbags that match a dress or outfit. It’s all about matching and being tonal.

 Fall 2018 shopping list: Shoes

Shoes for fall 2018 aren’t that different from last year. Look for street sneakers, mules, ankle boots, split ankle boots, lug soles, and thick, stacked heels.

Fall 2018 shopping list: Handbags

Handbags for the fall 2018 season aren’t changing that much either. Keep your white bags, circle bags, box bags, and fanny packs. They are all remaining hot for the fall season. Small backpacks are also creeping into IT status for the fall season. Don’t go as mini as you did in 1995; fall 2018 is giving us small backpacks which fit what we need, without the kitchen sink.

If you are looking for something new when it comes to handbags, logo bags are getting hotter as we speak. If you don’t already have a closet full of LV, look for some fun new logo bags to add to your wardrobe in the autumn season.

Fall 2018 shopping strategy: Where to save and splurge

The best way to maximize your budget, and stay under it, is to save on some trends, and splurge on others. The best way to save money is to look for items priced under $150, or $100, which seem trendy or won’t get a lot of wear. I would look for bargains on fluted skirts, fanny packs, and western themed pieces. These items are on the trendier side and may not have a long shelf life beyond winter 2019.

When it comes to splurging, look for investment pieces which are classic and will have staying power. I would invest in a beautiful moto jacket, a trench coat, a pair of ankle boots, and a wrap dress. These items are considered timeless, even when they aren’t on the runways.

There you have it! Now that you have shopped your closet, and made a list, you are armed and ready for the upcoming Nordstrom Anniversary Sale; as well as every stores’ fall offerings. So, what do you plan to buy first? I’m planning on getting a wrap dress, a wrap top, new ankle boots, fall florals, and a fluted skirt.

Happy shopping, and stay fabulous 😉

How to shop your closet for fall 2018

pictured:  A Detacher runway for fall 2018 at NYFW

It’s that time of year again! Although the temperatures are soaring into the 90’s on an almost daily basis, the stores are beginning to stock fall merchandise. Our closets are almost full of summer clothing and accessories; but the stores are starting to look a lot like the weather has cooled off, and pumpkin spice latte’s are being served. Can someone pass me a cooler fan? Ugh!

Despite the fact that we are sweltering in this summer heat, we need to shift our shopping minds to the fall season. The first thing we all need to do before we buy anything for fall, is to shop our closets. Now, you might be wondering, how do I shop my closet for fall 2018? Well, let me break that down for you.

Step one of how to shop your closet for fall 2018:

The first thing you will want to do is remove anything from your closet that doesn’t fit anymore, is damaged, or you haven’t worn in a few years; and anything you just aren’t in love with anymore. Anything that doesn’t fit, but is in new or gently used condition, can be resold. For designer pieces, look to TheRealReal. For other items, check out ThreadUp. If you have damaged clothing, please recycle them. I wrote about how to recycle clothing here. All other items can be donated to your favorite charity.

Step two of how to shop your closet for fall 2018:

The next thing you will want to do, in order to shop your closet for fall 2018, is to pull forward pieces which are on trend for the fall 2018 season. Here are the hot trends to look for in your closet:

1) Handbags: Keep any circle bags and small box bags you have in your closet. These handbags will continue to be hot for the fall 2018 season. They were all over the NYFW runways for the fall and winter seasons, so you know they will stay in style through early 2019-at least. If you don’t own a small box bag or a circle bag, this is something to invest in for the fall season.

2) Colors: The big colors for the fall 2018 include yellow, green, blue, and shades of purple. Black will be the big neutral hue as well as white. Keep your white shoes from last year too! They are going to be on fire for fall!

3) Volume sleeves: The big sleeve trend is going nowhere fast. The fall 2018 runways were covered with big shoulders, big sleeves, and tons of volume. Keep your fun sleeves and rock them with pride this fall 2018 season.

4) Trench Coats: OK, I know I have talked about trench coats making a big comeback-well here it is! They were the IT coat on the fall runways, so dust off your classic trench coat, or your not-so-classic trench coat, and rock it this fall. Trench coats are the ultimate cover-up when temperatures dip this autumn season.

5) Menswear plaid: The menswear trend will stick around for fall 2018. While it won’t be the number one trend of the season, menswear pieces will still be extremely relevant for the fall season. Keep your blazers, trousers, shirts, and dresses. Rock all your conservative menswear plaid; it’s hot for fall.

6) Metallic shoes: Metallic shoes are sticking around for another season. While they may not be available in the early fall sales, they were all over the runways for the fall 2018 season. So wear your metallic shoes from last year and watch for new styles to hit store shelves later in September.

7) Cozy teddy coats: The teddy coat trend was huge last year, and it shows no sign of stopping for the fall 2018 season. Keep your teddy coats from last year and rock them this year. If you don’t have one from last year, this is something to invest in for fall 2018. They are super soft, cozy, and fun! Love that!

8) Moto jackets: The moto jacket slips in and out of style every few years. For fall 2018, it is slipping into style! Dust off your old moto jacket from the back of your closet and rock it this fall. If you don’t have one yet, there are several cute ones for fall 2018 in the upcoming Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I will highlight the cutest ones at the best prices from the sale later this week. If you prefer vegan, you can find this fabulous vegan moto jacket online now for under $100. I bought it last week. <blushes>

9) Fall Florals: Florals for fall have been an ongoing trend for the past few years. Keep rocking your fall florals for fall 2018! They are being shown on skirts, blouses, and dresses. Look for black, green, and yellow floral patterns for fall and top off the look with a moto jacket. Love it!

10) Fanny Packs aka Belt Bags: Ugh, I don’t encourage this trend, and to be frank, I wish it stayed in the 80’s. Although I prefer to avoid them, they are still proving to be hot for fall 2018. So, if you must, keep rocking your fanny pack/belt bag.

Last step of how to shop your closet fall 2018:

Store everything else from last fall. New trends will appear as the season gears up and celebrities are spotted on the streets wearing something obscure from the runways; or not from the runways at all. Plus, as you know, everything old is new again at some point; so store your clothing and accessories appropriately! If you don’t pull them out for fall 2018, you may pull them out next year, or the year after.
