Rainbows for summer 2018

Raise your hand if you remember wearing everything rainbow as a kid? My hand is so far up! When I was little, rainbows were everywhere. I had a rainbow tee-shirt I used to wear all the time with blue track shorts. I remember one of my teachers had sandals which resembled modern-day Tevo’s. They had two fabric straps with a rainbow pattern. All of the kids in our class loved her shoes and always wanted to wear them, after all, rainbows were all the rage!

There is something inherently 1970s about rainbows. They remind me of long, straight hair and acoustic guitar. Rainbows bring me back to a time when hippies were everywhere, and colors were celebrated. Of course, I did grow up in Marin, so there may have been a disproportionate amount of hippies running around. haha

Rainbows also evoke a feeling of life before wireless phones, life before remote controls, life before power windows in the car, life before cell phone, and life before wireless everything. They are quite nostalgic!

Back when rainbows were in style, if the phone rang, we had to run to it because there wasn’t an answering machine. If you were tired, you still had to stand if you answered the phone in the kitchen because there wasn’t any place to sit down, and the phone was hard wired into the wall. Wireless phones did not exist!

We only had twelve television stations with cable. That’s right, only twelve! If you wanted to change the channel, you had to stand up and turn the dial. That’s right, turn the dial! There weren’t any buttons, only two dials; one for the stations and one for UHF. The main dial went up to thirteen, you know, in case the powers that be added a station past twelve. Since we had cable, we never used the UHF dial. I’m not sure what it did, but I do know you needed rabbit ears to use it. Pop quiz; do you know what rabbit ears are?

On the car door, inside the car, there was a crank for opening and closing the windows. There was a gas crisis when I was in pre-school, so we had to wait in line to get gas for the car; and sometimes the gas stations ran out of gas, which meant you were basically out of luck-and gas!

There was a huge drought, and I still remember the huge pipe that went across the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. It carried water over the bay to help out the East Bay which was shorter on water then we were. Water rationing was so severe, we ate off paper plates and used paper cups to drink. We had an insert in the bathtub so that baths used less water. It was crazier then any drought the bay area has had since!

In the days of rainbow fashion, everyone drove a really big car. In fact, almost all the moms drove a giant station wagon with wooden side panels. My mom was an outlier with her BMW 320i. It was tiny in comparison, and we got a little bit of teasing for not driving an American car. Oh yes, even driving Basic Marin Wheels at that time was not the norm; like it is now in Marin! Haha

So while the world was not automatic, and American cars were king, we were all running around wearing rainbows. Fast forward to modern day, and I have to search for an American car on the road; but I see rainbows everywhere! How can you not?! Everyone has some form of rainbow on their person for summer 2018. Whether it’s rainbow striped dresses, an article of clothing, a pair of shoes, a handbag, or a piece of jewelry; rainbows are dominating the landscape. It’s the 1970s trend that has not seen daylight since, well, the 1970s! Welcome back!

I really want to wear the rainbow trend this season. The only hesitation I have is that rainbows are a memory for me. They bring me back to a simpler time. Rainbows are a favorite childhood sartorial memory for me, so to think of wearing them again seems strange, almost costume-like to me. While I would normally think this is a trend to start small on, I am leaning towards getting a skirt or dress with rainbow stripes for the summer season. Why not go all in?

Summer 2018 shopping strategy

francesca liberatore ss18 nyfw

a matching set from the Francesca Liberatore spring/summer 2018 runway at NYFW

Summer 2018 is upon us, this means we need to get our closets ready for the hot weather season! There are plenty of runway trends which are hitting the streets this season that we have seen before. What does this mean for us? This means we can shop our closets for summer trends which are continuing from spring, and last summer. Love that!

The first thing to do before shopping for summer 2018, is to look through our closets to find the current summer trends. This will fill in our summer wardrobes, and let us know exactly what we need to actually buy. The more we can find in our closets for summer, the less money we have to spend on our summer wardrobes!

When shopping your closet for summer, look for these trends and items to bring forward for summer:

Straw Handbags: I can’t emphasize enough how important straw bags are this summer season. You can re-wear your Cult Gaia Ark bag from last year, or wear anything straw you can find in your closet. If you don’t have a straw bag, look for a circle one to rock this season.

Espadrilles: Of course, this is a summer staple, so you should already have a pair in your closet. As long as they survived last summer, pull them out and wear them with your straw handbag. If not, grab a pair of wedges, and a flat pair to get you through the summer.

Two-piece sets: Time to show off those abs! Look for matching sets which include shorts sets, pant sets, dress/coat sets, and skirt sets. You’ll find both modest, and tummy revealing versions on the market. This was an emerging trend last year which has taken off this year. If you happen to have been an early adapter, you may have a set in your closet. If not, join me on the quest for the perfect set!

spring 2018 mules

Mules and Slides: This has been a popular shoe style for a couple of years now. You should already have a pair of mules or slides in your closet, if not, this is a great time to invest in a pair for the summer season!

Kitten Heels: This has been an emerging trend in footwear over the past few seasons. For summer 2018, kitten heels are all the rage. If you don’t have a pair collecting dust in your closet from ten years ago, or last year, then this is the time to invest in a pair. If you prefer a higher heel like I do, it’s OK to skip this trend. You don’t have to be short for fashion. My 5’4” frame refuses! Haha

Shades of purple: This is the color of the year, so anything in the purple family from spring can stay in the forefront of your summer closet. If you don’t already own shades of purple, then buy all the purple you see!

Fanny Packs aka “Belt Bags:” I hate to admit it, but fanny packs are all the rage for the summer season. If you have already jumped on this trend, then you’re all set for summer. If you are looking for the cross body’s replacement, this is it. Look for fabulous fanny packs by every major designer and brand. I’ll try to pretend this trend isn’t happening.

street style handbags

Circle Bag, Candy Colored Handbags, and White Bags: These were hot for spring, and are still hot for summer. Keep rocking your circle, white and/or candy colored bags!

Leopard print: Meow! Normally viewed as a fall print, all things leopard are hot for summer. If you have anything leopard print from fall, wear it this summer! Unless it’s wool, or a coat, then refrain. If you don’t have anything lightweight in leopard, this is a great trend to invest in for the summer 2018 season. You will be able to continue to wear it in the fall when temperatures stay high. It’ll make a great transitional print between the summer and autumn seasons. Plus, you can wear it year after year, every fall season! Love that!

The summer 2018 trends can help us make our shopping lists for the hot weather season. Always shop your closet first, then buy the trends you like for the summer that you don’t already own. Remember, you don’t have to rock every trend. I plan to skip kitten heels and fanny packs; and I’m on the fence about matching sets.

What I’m loving for summer so far:

Which summer trends do you plan to wear? Any you plan to skip?

Espadrilles for summer 2018

from top left: gingham espadrilles / golden espadrilles / silver thong espadrilles / black toe capped espadrilles / black wedge espadrilles (I own these and love them, super comfy and classic-and under $100!) / black low wedge espadrilles (I own these and they are fabulous everyday, go-to espadrilles!)

Summer is almost here! This means we need to get our footwear game ready for soaring temperatures. I love wearing espadrilles when it’s hot outside. They let your feet breath, keeping sweating to a minimum, and offer so much comfort! Even espadrille wedges fell like soft pillows under-foot! Love!

This summer espadrilles are being shown in several fun styles this season. You will classic flat styles such as the golden pair shown above, as well as two-tone styles, and prints. Also, look for wedges with either an ankle strap that ties or buckles. Since shoes with twists and ties on top are hotter then hot in the footwear world right, you will find them on espadrilles this summer as well.

There are so many cute espadrilles for summer 2018 on the market right now, so I narrowed it down to my favorite styles and assembled them into the shopping widget below. I hope you love them!
